Chaincase fluid change

i believe there is a drain plug at the bottom of the chaincase. Im not sure how much fluid you put in or what you buy.. can anyone verify? i didnt see it in the FAQ

I do it every 2000week miles or at the beginning of the season. Yes there is a drain plug on the inner side of the tunnel. Better to take the cover off and clean it up good though!

I would do it once a season, just did my 08 with 3600 ish miles and it looked pretty dirty. Glad I changed it. Easy to drain, and Yamaha sells a small bottle of the oil that is about the exact amount needed.

Hey Soerenson1610, it could be possible that you might have a bearing going bad in your chaincase. Years back my uncle bought a used 500 vmax and i was helping him change the oil and it was horribly dirty. We dumped it and later that year he had a bearing go out. Just a thought.

actually yami says chaincase oil is suppose to be done like 500 miles with the first oil change.
i didnt and ran till 1700.
oil was broken down, but no metal filings.
i believe after break in the interval is recomended to be 1500miles....or once a season.
just picked up the yami bottle to do the new phazer.

I just had it all apart and the bearings were all good, I'm not sure its ever been changed before. I'm the 2nd owner. The driveshadt bearing was smoked but that isn't tied to the chaincase. Ill keep a eye on it though, thanks for the tip

I change mine every season. Last year it was changed 2 times for different reasons. Not alot of miles on the last run but it is amazing how it can get dirty or used up so fast. I also installed a magnetic drain plug and the fine powder like metal flakes that are stuck to that magnet every year blows my mind. It looks like black sludge but when you rub the magnet into a rag you can see the metal. And soon get the idea of just how harsh it is inside that chaincase.

Where did you get the magnetic dipstick
