06 Apex RTX 4,500 miles:

A few observations

1) My new donuts looked pretty much the same as my old donuts. In other words, on my sled with 4,500 miles the donuts were still in great shape. Since I had it apart I changed them anyway.

2) I used "Dans" instructions from the FAQ section and it worked great. THANKS DAN!

3) Although it may look intimidating, I was surprised at how easy this job really is. Just follow the instructions step by step and You wont have a problem.

4) Make sure you have a 5mm hex head ratchet before you get started. A regular allen wrench or T - handle allen wrench wont be strong enough to loosen some of the bolts.

I agree. Not too difficult. Dan is right on! Mine with 6000 miles only had 1 donut at about 50% gone. Other 3 were fine. I still replaced all.

My Vector with the same mileage had 1 totally gone, 1 40% gone and 1 ok.

How much do the donuts cost and I'm not talking about a dozen donuts either just 4.

When these fail, what are the symptoms? I was putting mine up for the season, doing all my PM, and I noticed when it was first started I can hear a slight ticking noise that gradually goes away as the sled warms up. It is so faint that it could have been there since day one and I never noticed it because I had a helmet on.

Is this how it goes when they start to fail? I have an '07 Apext GT with around 3100 miles.

I doubt you have a problem. The reports I've heard have all been an audible leak and/or back firing. Mine never did fail or show any symptoms. I just decided to change them at 4,500 miles as preventative maintenance.

Mine got progressively louder and louder everytime I would start it. The ticking became much louder and it wouldn't completely go away once warmed up. But it was definately very noticeable at idle. Sled never backfired once though, contrary to what most others will say will happen. Pulled it apart and found one donut completely gone, two torn up pretty bad and one that looked good yet.

If they are leaking you should be able to hear it if you pull of the clutch side panel mine was noisey mostly from that side. It starts so gradual some times you dont notice it right away.

Racer Dave I have a custom yellow rtx also, went with the stock decals back on the hood, boy are those skull decals exp. Also a yellow stripe in the seat looks pretty cool, havent figured how to do photos yet on here. As to your question on miles, my 07 gt has about 4500 on it, I pulled it appart several weeks ago because of all the post on this. Mine were about 95% burned thru just caught them in time. It seems like do it now or deal with it in the middle of riding season. My 2 cents Jeff

On both my Vector and Attak it sounded like a rattle coming from the tunnel towards the engine...

Oh yea forgot to mention, mine also did that on top of the loud exhaust noise. ;)! No backfiring though, lol
