I noticed some weird belt wear on a new-ish sled (350 miles on it):

And saw this on primary:

Any ideas? the 'collar' is on the outer sheave, moves when I compress the clutch inward. I'm a clutch ignorant...

looks like the belt was sitting to low in the clutches. How much belt was showing above the secondary? How many miles on the machine? It could be the outer clutch cover bushing as moved somehow.

Pete

that belt is burnt and ok for a limp home spare but i throw them out when they get like that.

something is sticking/slipping as i have never seen a primary clutch discoloured like that before.

I don’t remember that collar sticking out on mine. That belt doesn’t look discolored it looks like there is a groove worn in it.

Yeah you need to pull off that primary. Something is wrong. Here is what it should look like.

Classic case of 'don't look a gift horse in the mouth' - my buddy got a smoking deal on this sled, 350 miles on the odometer. Plan to take the clutch off this weekend - should be interesting.

Thanks for all the replies

With that collar showing like that, it's almost looks like the fixed sheave is not installed on the spider correctly. Also the discoloration on the shaft would indicate excessive heat, possibly due to the belt defection being to tight or the incorrect belt being used at some point.
I agree though, it needs to be removed and disassembled for inspection.

What sled? What is that in the background of your pics?

The background is my garage floor - I took the picture looking straight down. The subframe is off the sled, so it does look strange.

I really hope it's something as simple as an error in assembly from factory.

So FX nytro ? I don’t know what that secondary clutch is but that’s not stock either. You might want to post a pic of it.

I’m gonna guess that someone swapped the ecu and this sled has many more miles. Hard to believe someone messed up the clutch and bent the subframe and changed out the secondary all in 350 miles.

My apologies - forgot to mention this is a buddy's phazer. I posted here as there seems to be more clutch expertise than other area. Rest of sled is pristine - 350 miles appears accurate.

The subframe has to come off for the steering fix, easier to do oil change

RTFM with the service manual, likely you can measure the belt "height" from the service manual and confirm new belt placement in the primary is correct. If not, as others suggest, then there are other issues; walk through each one at a time and clutch ignorant or not you will learn quick!

Local clutch guru took it apart (I got to watch); a bushing was not seated correctly from the factory. Pressed it in with locktite, reassembled and balanced it. Glad it was something easy.
