the primary clutch on me viper started rattling yesterday and I hate it. At least I think it’s the roller bolts because they have some play and I can slide them from side to side. Do these need to have the slop in them. I was thinking of removing the nut and installing a small O ring and put the nut back on. Would this be ok to do.

Nothing wrong with the loose thru bolt, all the Yamaha clutches bolts move they have to. My clutch on the viper sounds this way, a bit louder than my ‘99 600! Nothing to worry about and NEVER spray or squirt any kind of lubricant on these clutches, it’ll just wear all the parts out faster.

I realize that this is nothing to worry about. I just think it’s extremely poor that I spent the kind of money I did on this sled to have it sound like it’s going to fly apart every tine I hit the throttle so I’m looking for a way to stop it. It’s terrible that Yamaha can build such an awesome engine but can’t make a clutch that sounds like it’s going to fly apart.my 03 rx1 and my wife’s 06 attack have washers under the nuts and are snug and don’t slop back and forth. I’m just wondering if the viper clutch is the same and this can be done to it.

Good observation on the washers! Look up your sled on the parts finder on this site and see if there’s washers on your make. But if you think it’ll help why not do it? As long as you keep the washers all the same for balance I suppose!

Yes good point on the balance. I was just unsure if there was a reason for the bolts to be sloppy on the vipers. If not, I’ll put washers on them or start with the small rubber O rings to see if that stops the rattle.

On an apex clutch they have Allen head set screws that you can tight up on the roller bushing just like what’s on the weight bushing, the viper clutch does not have the set screws on the roller bushing. I run a complete apex primary on my viper, no clutch rattle at all. You can add a washer under the nut as long as it fits over the roller bushing you’ll be fine.

Well I added a small rubber O ring to each roller bolt to take the slop out and it didn’t help so that obviously wasn’t the problem. The rattle starts just before the clutch engages and after.
