Bought a new 05 Vector which I still have
24K miles
I have a 2005 Vector ER that I've always thought goes thru too many belts for the way I ride (trail cruizr). I hear of folks getting 3000 miles out of the stock Yamaha 8DN belt. I'm lucky to get 2000 miles. Alignments, offset, etc. are all in spec. Through the years (and almost 15,000 miles) various components on both clutches have been replaced when needed. I clean the clutches at least 2X per season.

So that takes me to belt and clutch temps. Do you guys think these run hot? Has anybody "opened up" the clutch area to let more air in and get the hot air out? I'm always worried about snowdust getting in there but maybe I shouldn't worry about it?

Thoughts out there?

:rocks:

I installed a Yamaha Bezel-Kit that is suppose to let the warm air out as your traveling and it looks sweet two! I dont think there is any kits for the 05 Vector from yamaha? you may have to go aftermarket,..the new Vipers and Acrtic-cats have a spot right in front of the clutch to cool it down some, just worried about ice chunks and good blast of snow if your to close because its down low..

Something is still wrong. My first belt went 4700 miles & i still have it. I'm a very aggressive rider. My friends call me ''throttle''. I change my belt every year, but i have a stack of 2000 to 3000 mile belts that are in perfect shape. I may just put them on e-bay. First of all, i found the original Yamaha alignment tool was incorrect for my Apexes. There's center to center, offset, offset play, alignment top & bottom. Are your engine mounts good? Is your secondary wound too tight? Unless there was a difference between Vector & Apex; something is awry...

I can only say the secondary is backed off from 6-1 to 3-3. I don't see anything in the mounts to think something is wrong. I do not have access to the tools you mention and it has been a few years since a dealer checked everything. I have done my best to date to check C t C, offset and offset play. Alignment? = No.

This is why I'm asking...some people say 2K is OK on a belt. A couple of perf. shops say it's OK. I don't know who to believe......... :o|

So much depends on conditions, riding style, & weight of rider's'. 2,000 miles you should get a CAT, lucky to get 500 on some. Anyhow I don't know much about these yet but a good friend of mine always took a shim or 2 off the backside of the secondaries of the Polaris's I've owned. He worked at a dealer for years and they had a race team...if they float they self align is what he told me....wifes 700 edge we bought used in 2008 with 6k now over 9k and still has the used belt in it we bought it with! On your 05 vector it has a hood so run it hard open it and if you can't put your hand on the clutches or belt something is way off.
