What’s up guys,
I have the ulmer clutch kit, secondarty set at A2.
Tops out perfect 11,400rpm, does well in deep snow too.
If I hit the throttle from dead start or low speeds I go over 12,000 and often hit rev limiter.
Any suggestions as to how much weight to add to primary arms? and do I add to the bottom hole? 2 grams, 4 grams?
I have not tuned a clutch in a lot of years and could use help.
I de-greased, cleaned and polished the secondary and it was like a whole new sled.
Thanks

You need a 2.4 gram rivet in the inner hole (closest to where the pin goes through the weight to hold it in the clutch).

Thanks! I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Is that what is called the heel? And will heavier weights there bring the RPM's down?Srxspec said:You need a 2.4 gram rivet in the inner hole (closest to where the pin goes through the weight to hold it in the clutch).

Did it on the weekend. Helped a great deal, but...
Rev limiter still kicks in at very low speeds when I hit the throttle, and will from a dead stop also.
Hardpack: pulls noticably harder, RPM gets up to 11,600 quickly and creeps up to 11,850 at times.
Deep snow: RPM sits around 10,900-11,000, seems to depend on how deep it is. In some real deep, like 3' of powder, it went as low as 10,600 for a bit.
Do I need MORE weight in the heel than 2.4 grams? It was pretty easy to do.
Also of note on a "highway" (flat hardpack for miles on a lake...) I topped out at 131 km/h or about 82 mph, and that was turning 11,800 rpm.
Is it just me or does it seem like the Phazer was given a piece of crap for a secondary? I am thinking of finding one from a Vmax 500 or something so at least I can stop using snap-ring pliers to get it apart!
It seems as though there is a lot more performance to be had on a Phazer, it lies in the clutch being set up properly!

i pulled i shim out from between the 2ndary sheaves when i cleaned it.. you might have trouble getting it into reverse with a brand new belt. but once it is broken in, no issues.. not sure if it helps top end but it deff give it more snap off the line.. since i have done this and also clean the crud off the inside of my 2ndary and took off my pc3 and ignition module i have seen 88-89mph consistantly on the dream meter and 91mph once.. was only seeing 77-79mph b4. i will occasionaly hit the rev limiter from like a 15mph to pinned run, but i think it is mostly from track spin..

Yes, that is the "heel" portion of the weight. A heavier rivet will bring the rpm down.

How is your belt tension? When it touches the rev limiter at a very slow speed or from a dead stop do you feel alot of track spin happening?[/quote]

The track hooks up like a mofo
of course it would be spinning a lot in the powder, but on hardpack it really launches
belt tension seems to be OK.
anyone know the deflection measurement?

I saw that in the shop manual that I downloaded from here but can't remember right now - I'd say it would also be in the owner's manual. As for the secondary, I put in the SBM Stage II Helix and although I didn't check before and after for top speeds and RPM's, it certainly seems to gain speed much faster and smoother than before. Of course I won't get the top speeds like you guys on the Phazers but I am quite pleased with it.MikeWalters said:The track hooks up like a mofo

Some pics of how I installed the rollers back in the primary clutch.
I found it difficult to reinstall the pin/bushing/whatever it is called while trying to hold the rollers and washers in place. So I put the roller and washers in place and put a screwdriver through the holes to hold it; then I was able to put the pin back in the other side while slowly pulling the screwdriver back. This way it was easier to keep everything lined up and was able to do the same when reinstalling the fly weights.

Well my fingers aren't too fat so I found it easy. probably cause I am used to it from working on electronics.
But hey good tip

OK
So a couple more questions on this year old thread
Went out today and I am pulling 11,500 - 11,900 in a few inches of powder flying down a feild. After settling out it is more like 11,600 - 11,700.
Pulled up on the road and its 11,800 - 12,000.
Either way still hitting rev limiter low speed and a bit on take-off.
This is too much rpm I know.
My secondary was changed to A2 originally, and have added 2.4grams to the heel of the primary arms.
I am wondering if I need to go back to A1 (stock) on the secondary, or do I really need to keep adding weight to primary? What y'all think?

Yeah, thought someone would say that!
Over-revving is worst at tale off so going to try heavier heel weight first.
Thinking 5 grams, 2.4 didn't do much last time.
Thanks

Throw it at the tip and then go back to heel if you want. Its kind of like fuel mapping or jetting. If you arent seeing results you may think you are headed wrong way.Go big then go back.
