Intake temps are cool
I have plate behind intercooler opened up also.
Just an idea to save money over cai
I’ll have precision 3r on sled shortly so that’s going on the shelf
 
Yes, but it comes with a .5 lb boost increase also. So in reality there is no gain from the part itself, just the boost increase. You know why the speed and drag sleds all run the ram air intake out the front of the hood? It builds boost to the already too small turbo and makes more power. When your limited to the puny stock turbo you do what you can to make a few more HP.

If you want more power for the trail, its cheaper and easier to go to next size up tune and reap the benefit of colder air to the clutches and cooler belt and clutches IMO. Just throwing that fact out there. Intake and clutches will stay cooler-longer with the stock airbox.
What about the aluminum belly guard we been putting in , i'm running without mine this year it seemed to make my clutches real hot i never noticed that until i installed it, i have a precision belly guard belt protector for sale if any one wants it $100
 
I've gone back and forth till I was blue in the face with the WAI. Its not about the temps being run, its how much cooler the stock intake runs over the WAI. In one blast with the WAI, temps get into the 120'sF on the 290 tune. With the stock box they will get up there at 90-100F. If the turbo is spooling hard, its making heat and hot intake temps.

Installing the stock airbox is like adding a larger intercooler. Larger intercooler up front drops temps about 10F also as an example.

Running around at average trail speeds, the stock box is 10-15F cooler over a good WAI stuffed right up into the intake screen where its robbing air that could be going to cool the clutches. Bottom line, stock airbox runs cooler intake temps and will stave off the heat longer.

When these machines get up at 90-100F intake temps, the power goes away quickly. Want a real aftermarket CAI, it has to go outside the hood, and if it goes outside the hood you better be sure you can fuel it for that. I went real lean with it when I did that. 12.8-12.9 and even 13.0 AF ratio. Needless to say I couldn't leave it that lean so had to go away from the filter outside the hood like I had it.

Yup. Need one that is ventilated. I made my own and in addition added additional side panel venting (both front and back) to try to get more air through clutch compartment.

Keep the guards off the plastics in front of the clutch , often when the belt blows it hits so hard it will push the protector right though the front, even when bolted to the top stock guard.
 
Yes. There's about a 3/4-1" gap between my 6061-T6 guard and front plastics. My plastics and guard have already survived 3-4 blown belts at WOT. I've had to straighten my guard but it held. Thanks.

I believe it would. I stuck the filter thru my hood and mine went a whole one point leaner as I recall. about 12.8-13:1 AFR as I remember. I'd need to adjust with adjustable fuel pressure regulator to get back into the 11's or low 12's.

Speedwerx. I also opened up the rear using Frogzskin vents to encourage more flow through the whole clutch area. BTW- I also added more venting to the muffler side (both front and back) to help get more heat out. That muffler gets really hot at 18 lbs of boost!

Agree, additional venting is very important, even more so when tuned.
 
Hey Guys, just took my CAI out , like Knapp says robbing warm engine air and making clutches hotter. I put stock air box back in and I ordered a 12" x 12" pre filter material so I can use it instead of foam filter to get more air flow. Dennis Kirk has them in stock $20.00 includes shipping. Has anyone tried this on their air box ? I have not done it yet because pre filter material has not come yet. Chime in if anyone has ideas on mod! Thanks happy trails!
Tommcat Performance has tested the stock air box including foam filter vs. a completely empty airbox on their dyno. I believe the sled they used was a tuned Winder. Guess what? Zero change in horsepower and air flow. Conclusion: stock air box w foam element is not restrictive; at least not w the vast majority of trail tunes out there. The intake was louder, if you like that, but no change in HP.

Good information and thank you for sharing,but has anyone tested the stock air box versus a aftermarket "CAI" on a trail tuned sled?
