Yes, been done more than once. I believe Mike Knapp had done it.

Yes, I found cooler intake temps using stock airbox by quite a bit, but the WAI allowed for a bit more boost, to the tune of about .5 lbs more boost or so, and of course any increase in boost also makes more intake temp heat to compound matters. I measured 100F air right at the air cleaner with the "WAI". One thing is certain a underhood "CAI" is anything but cold or even cool air. CAI would be outside the hood intake IMO.

I believe it would. I stuck the filter thru my hood and mine went a whole one point leaner as I recall. about 12.8-13:1 AFR as I remember. I'd need to adjust with adjustable fuel pressure regulator to get back into the 11's or low 12's.
I’m pretty sure you guys are seeing leaner AFR’s because of ramming air effect into the filter or just better airflow from the modified setup.
The intake air temp should be compensated for with the iat sensor. Colder air and the ecu should provide more fuel? If what your saying is true, then a simple ambient air temperature change would cause lean mixtures. That would be a tuning issue. I will say my sled tends to run lean when it’s really cold outside tho.
Here’s the deal tho, with iat’s nice and low, there’s less chances of deto so maybe an AFR of 12.8 is acceptable? When the temps climb, you’ll need to richen up the mix to hold off detonation.
Speedwerx. I also opened up the rear using Frogzskin vents to encourage more flow through the whole clutch area. BTW- I also added more venting to the muffler side (both front and back) to help get more heat out. That muffler gets really hot at 18 lbs of boost!
I wrapped my muffler & pipe with header wrap. This helps bigtime! Keeps the heat away from yer oil tank too. Also getto drilled a bunch of small holes in the plastic, muffler side for airflow.

I've got a CAI tune and can put back stock airbox without issue. Putting stock airbox with CAI Tune in my case, will cause boost to drop 2.5 lbs and run richer with a little loss of performance, but sled still runs well and actually might run a little safer. I've done it on saddlebag trips where I anticipate a big snow storm 0and dont want the CAI to inhale constant moisture. Inhaling snow/moisture over hundreds of miles with temps swinging up and down can sometimes wreak havoc on sensors. If I had to do it over, I dont think the CAI is worth the 3hp ...... Just my 5 cents.
Clutchmaster, how bout a couple pics of the wrap job and holes?
Some companies sell a fireproof turbo blanket. What are your thoughts....worth it?

Wow 2.5 lbs seems like a lot. I see .5 lbs max on my Hurricane tune and not much change in AFR at all, maybe.1-.2 is all. I agree I like the stock air box for safety keeping snow out as well as cooler intake temps. Actual gains in the field with Underwood “CAI” for me is nothing, zip nada, but stuff it outside the hood like in my page 1 pictures on this thread and it’s a huge gain in performance but goes WAY TO LEAN for my comfort for trail use. Not worth it to run that lean for me.

My muffler is right next to my oil tank, so I had to do something about the transfer of heat into the oil. This is the “Volcano Wrap” it holds up MUCH better than the standard header wrap. Actually the cheap stuff is just above the muffler on the pipe, much harder to get it tight.
You can really lock it into position with this high temp paint. It really didn’t need it on the muffler, but when wrapping pipes it solidifies the wrap and keeps it intact.
These are stainless tie wraps I use on the pipes, for the muffler they are just the wider and longer ones. Pulling them tight is tricky, they make a tool but you can get them pretty tight with a pair of vice grips but clamping close to the wedge and folding the tail over with the vice grips. I knock the little wedge in the strap with a small punch to seat it, best with four hands! Ha
The biggest key to getting a tight wrap with header wrap is to fill a 5 gal bucket with soapy water and throw the wrap into it. Wetting the wrap will make it much tighter during wrapping. Also I think it shrinks a little when it dries. Do a pre wrap to determine the length you will need, leave extra. I try to wrap with about a 50% overlap. Cutting is a beatch, I use a pair of sharp metal shears to cut this stuff. It will fray but don’t worry, when it’s dry just trim the fray and spray the high temp paint to prevent further unravel. It must be totally dry before painting, don’t be shy with paint, it’s needs two coats as it soaks it up like a sponge.

Have you had any problems with the Mo flow vent tearing?Or put a couple MO FLOW vents in . Best money I ever spent.

Would like to know how your venting is holding up? Just installed on mine and do they allow any snow ingestion or did you put frogskins behind them?Speedwerx. No problems with snow getting in at all. I don't have Frogzskin behind the Speedwerx ones at the front of the side panel, just the screen mesh they come with. I have other Frogzskin vents.Would like to know how your venting is holding up? Just installed on mine and do they allow any snow ingestion or did you put frogskins behind them?

Nice, i did similar, on both sides, get a lot of air moving through the engine compartment. get rid of under hood heat.No problems with snow getting in at all.
