So I'm in the process of putting my sled back together and before I installed the oil tank back on I decided to clean the strainer. When I pulled the strained out there was a small amount of gunk on it but also notice there were small pieces of what looked like cooper slivers the largest being about a 16th of an inch. Started thinking maybe it's has a bearing issue but usually you only see only very small specs in the oil on bearing failure. The sleds a 07 with about 6,000 miles and runs fine without any strange noises. Ideas? Anyone else see this in their sleds. I bought the sled this spring and rode it for about 10 miles before I put it away without any problems.

You could analyze the oil. A company I will not name causes people might be getting sick if hearing it for $32.20 with pre-paid postage or $22.45 no postage if PC $25.75/$17.95.
If you still have the oil and has not been contaminated by other oil new or old, other chemicals, dirt or water from other then engine they can tell whats going on in the engine in health, oil life, and what is the stuff you have in it. I would include that small piece and the gunk as well.

Do you have the oil filter? If so cut it apart and check for same particles. I dont remember anything like that on my screen. Just silicone residue.

I usually keep the last oil change oil on hand but not all about 1 pint some times the filter as well. If the engine is new or rebuilt I will keep the break in samples as well. I could them sampled each time but this is more of extra insurance.
There a few companies that do it that are known Black Stone Labs but has one locations (I think) and Oil Analyzer, Inc had several locations in US and one in Canada. Only problem is Amsoil sells for OAI but I was told they are not owned by them, just used for some independent testing.
They both do the same thing analyze oil, antifreeze, fuels, ext.

Pieces could come from the washers for oiltank or engine drain. Maybe some was in the threads. I would want to see the filter though.

That is possible the plug could be brass or the washer could be copper or brass, I don't remember on the Phazer. X2 on the filter should see if you have sludge build up in it as well or filter media break down.

Where you getting the silicon residue? I have never seen it in any of my filters. Then again it hard to check it because of the nano fibers and wire messing making it hard to rip it apart if it in the media.

Unless you mean its on the oil bung and you used silicon to seal it?

The bottom hose out of the oil tank's screen is my bet.

Yes it was on the strainer bottom hose of oil tank. Just first time I checked that strainer. Something from factory engine build I would imagine.

So I cut open the filter to have a look inside. Not one bit of the copper like slivers so I'm guessing it must have been something that was added to the tanks and only made it to the tank strainer.

Was there any copper colored particles at all? If not Whew! I was worried a bit.

Nothing at all. I unpleated the paper and used a light and nothing. I wasnt too worried because the particles on the strainer were fairly large and bearing material would be very fine specs. A light will pick it quite well, like stars in the night.

Since I never had this engine fully just only every nut, bolt, and rivet that is on the sled. Is there any bass bushing or brass components in the engine?
If the partials are big enough the screen will stop them before they get to the filter.
