So I'm taking the gas tank off to change the plugs. How do I know if I need new donuts? I'm assuming it will be obvious.

Oh, you will. Mine were done at ~4000 km. Once you remove the cover, you will see the two pipes and clamps. Remove the clamps and you'll see the donuts and the bare wire mesh instead of the gasket material, which has burned off. The mesh doesn't seal on its own. My copper donuts, after 10k km, are still good.

So without a fix exhaust leaks?

Here's what they look like. Doesn't look too bad to me.

You have to take the clamps off to see them. Spray some penetrating fluid on those bolts first.

I'm afraid to. I will find more work for myself.

Maybe just try to rotate them a bit to break the boot's grip on the plug. Can you post a pic of the top of the engine? My memory of them is foggy.
Edit: ignore the above. Mixed up two threads. They are pretty tough but some lube should help. Let it soak overnight.

I pulled the clamps off and the aluminum in there looked fine.

Not to be a dick or anything bit I still think you should replace them while you're there. They will eventually fail.

Hey no worries moose. How hard is it to get the old ones off and the copper ones on?

Not too complicated IIRC. Remove the clamps, two bolts to remove that hold the exhaust, pull the exhaust back to clear the donuts.

Again thanks for the info guys, I reckon I should just order mine now so I have them around for either when they go or when I've got the tank off for whatever other reason. What is the easiest source for Canadians?
And am I correct to say that we are all likely to end up replacing spindle bushings and that may as well be done before the holes are more oval than round. I see Mooseman has the UpBushman spindle/steering kit. What else does that include above the two spindle bushings?
Good to see you guys still active on the site and I hope you are having fine summers. Moose, I'd be further ahead if my memory was foggy but mine is just gone.
