Couple of SRViper XTX questions from a new guy

I've read a ton about the 800 2-smoke motors and what amazes me is the the buying public has accepted that the motors have a very short useful life. People are willing to pay 12k for a sled that they know will need a top end within several thousand miles and more serious maintenance to follow. I'm willing to have an engine that is 50 pounds heavier if it means I have don't have to worry about a meltdown. The viper motor (also used in other Yamaha sleds for years) is considered to be one of the greatest sled motors ever made. Even the guys on the doo forums will admit that these motors are a work of art.

Vilas...what have you determined about the 600 etec...are they better?
Snowtrax says the 1049 genesis is the best 4 stroke motor currently built for snowmobiling...better than the doo 1200 or the aces.

From my reading the 600 motor is a bit more reliable but will still need top end around 5k miles to be safe. In all fairness the etec motors are impressive, but they will never be as reliable as a four stroke. For the guys who want every ounce of power with the least weight, they are the answer. If you don't mind an extra 50 pounds of weight, you'll have an engine that is an absolute beast. The torque is awesome and the viper chassis is excellent.

So what is the weight of a 137 length viper?

Not exact... but 61 lbs. heavier comes to mind. Thing is you don't feel it at all when riding it.

7,000 miles means it's a keeper IMO. Some 14's have had issues, but with those miles grease the suspension, change oil and go.

My xtx is fun, on and off trail. I came from an apex and brain stem surgery. Now I can pretty much throw around another 4 stroke. 4 strokes belong on sleds. Once you own one, you will understand.

Great info guys. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the issues that some of the 2014s had? My other option would be to buy a hold over 2015, but man they are still very proud of those price tags. Especially considering there are still some noncurrent 2014s out there.

From what I know....

2014 - some had hot start issues (key would crank over and over but wouldn't start). The cure when you are on the trail and this happens. Turn key off, let gauge clear....turn key back on without cranking and press throttle 1/2 way, again turn off and let gauge clear...turn back on and start engine. Yamaha came out with a re-flash that was supposed to help this.

2014 - reverse update, make sure it had it done....covered by Yamaha

2014 - chaincase cover might have broken tab from one of the bolt holes....covered by Yamaha

2014 - some exhaust mufflers blowing out....covered by Yamaha

2014/2015 - some having the starter problem, covered by Yamaha for the most part.

Yes, every sled has issues, but when you look at the outcome, I wouldn't be afraid of these issues as it gets covered.

Fantastic. That will help tremendously

thanks for chatting with me last night PJABAS. Always helps to get a real perspective instead of a dealer feeding you BS.
I'm liking what I am seeing so far. The question is buy a used one ( only a couple to choose from) or hold for the time being and buy a new one later.
I really need to win the lottery!

My wife has a 2015 M6000 and I have a 2015 xtx let viper.
The tunnels are the same in both sleds but the M has the 153 track.
I like the feel of my viper better. As was said above I feel a 4 stroke belongs in a sled. It just feels tighter and a more solid machine all around.
I haven't used the M in the powder yet so I can't really comment on that but for the over all sled feel the viper is my choice.

Yamaha is really stepping up to the plate with any warranty issue or recall. I had the re-flash done on my Viper and had 0 issues this past season. My FLOAT 2 was leaking and Yamaha sent out a new shock to me this week. Not sure if it's the updated FLOAT 3 or if it's a held-over FLOAT 2.

I try and stay off the railroad beds in northern Maine. Not really what the Viper was designed for (and they get quite boring in my opinion). The torque from this motor is fantastic on wide, sweeping trails and pulls hard to top speed. I've gotten my XTX up to 98 on regular trails, but it will constantly pull 105 MPH on hard, freshly groomed trails. Off trails, this thing is a dream. Pulls onto its side easily and never got "stuck".

Handles better than my father's Apex XTX and I think it's more comfortable.

No worries, anytime u have my number ask away, No question to silly or small, that's how we all learn stuff

Got a 2015 xtx se and i love it rode 1300 miles last year in the key and grand marais, once you get it dialed in which took some figuring out the floats.
Shes mighty fine now.
Oh btw slydogs are not a good trail ski the keel is way to long and flat, but it is a awesome off trail ski.
Ive found the slp is a good choice for this sled with a front skid spring change from hygear.
Coming off a f-7 was to say the least a shocker, but got tired of building 2 stroke motors.
For me the power curve and the engine brake took a day or two too figure out,but now i cant see ever riding a 2 stroke again.

Unleash the beast
