Dirty bearings

Just an FYI, when you're doing your pre-winter maintenance, don't forget to check and grease the driveshaft bearing (the one below the secondary with the speed pickup sensor on it).

This is what my bearing looked like when I opened it up today. I had cleaned and greased this bearing before my last trip to Canada last year (did about 1200 miles on it). The grease I use is lithium based, and is pure white in color when fresh.

So the dark color is NOT what this grease is supposed to look like. Lots of junk in there, as well as some rust starting to form.

I cleaned it out nice, and regreased it. I'll keep it as a spare. Be sure to check, clean, repack or replace this bearing - it will be cheap insurance.

For the money why wouldn't you just replace it. I bet teh seals are not sealing very well, if you've had it apart and greased it a few times.

I said I am keeping it as a spare. Nothing wrong with it. Just reminding people to check it, and not forget about it. This $20 bearing may end your trip early.

I use Amzoil waterproof synthetic grease in this bearing mentioned and the one above it behind the Secondary. The sled is an 04 Warrior with 7700 miles on it (All in Quebec).
No rust and still looking good :tg:
 
i greased mine last year thinking i could get a second year out of it--- wrong, wasent till i went to change the skid this year i discovered it must have seized sometime last season and wore the axel down, ruining it. it spun freely when i removed it, and it still pulled 116 mph in the spring, go figure.

It's a good idea....They come off pretty easy, and no real special tools are needed. Just take the side cover off. Remove the 14mm bolt that holds the speedo-wheel on, 4 - 12mm nuts hold the retaining plate on. Then inside the tunnel loosen/remove the TWO Torx set screws that hold the locking collar to the shaft, and slide it out. Piece of cake.

I ordered 4 from my local bearing distributor they were $13 a piece. Pretty much a standard issue sealed bearing, 25mm with a locking collar.

2 seasons and 4100 miles on mine...just had the dealer replace it as insurance ($40 installed). Said it was a good thing I didn't ride anywhere with it like that as it was completely pooched! I know it may be overkill, but I'm going to grease it a few times a season and maybe just replace it each spring....better safe than sorry, since it seems to be a common (if not THE most common) failure part on all the RX and RX models....

The one that sits right behind the secondary clutch is the jackshaft bearing...Just do a search...Lots of topics on it. More involved to change.

I guess I am not as lucky as you....when I pulled my original one off, I had to use a puller and I had to CRANK on it before it finally popped loose-thought something was going to break before it came off.
