engine light on??

well i put new bars and a riser on my sled and i'm not using the headed grips anymore cause they didnt work in the first place so i put electric tape on them and put them to the side and now the engine light is on and flashing the code 81 which i found out meant electrical problems and thats obiviously whats it for so is there anyway to get it to go out?

If you remove the heated grips the computer tells you that the grips are not connected, that's all.

i know that but is there anyway to get that light to go out i dont want heated grips anyway and i want the engine light off is there a fuse or anything you can take out?

A resistor with the same ohm as the original grips on the circuitry should do the trick, but I'm no electrician nor an electronic guy so I can't be sure it will work.

You can breeze through a couple of the handwarmer threads to find the correct resistor value or wait for someone to post it here.....

Why didn't the grips work in the first place? Did you test them?

Individual Grip warmer resistance:
6.12 ~ 7.48 Ω at 20 °C (68 °F)

Given the tight tolerance on this type grip warmer, maybe one was not working correctly and needs to be replaced.

i did and i cant find any there should be someway you can search or something cause i would like to buy the element to and the grips and make them work again but where can i find them and len todd they didnt work at all you couldent even feel them heat up

You could try plugging the original grips in, turning them off via the rocker switch and then disconnecting them again. I understand the ECU only checks the circuit while the grips are on. Not sure if the light will go out if you do it with the grips not connected. And then if you accidentally hit the rocker again, you'll re-set the code. May have to play with it a little to see what happens.

I listed the proper resistance above. It must have been a very limited search. Eh? ;-)

But, you will have to do some finagling with resistors to come up with a combination that is close (e.g. like (three 22 ohm resistors) You could start with 1/2 watt values and see if they overheat.

But, I would just get the proper grip warmers and be done with it. Why risk burning up the ECU? Why cobble up a good sled? Also, cold hands are a real bummer on a long trip.

just order a set of heated grps from cr racing canada the were on $25 and shipped them very very fast
ps the yamaha oem style were $125

This may be a good way to go. What is the resistance across them? As the sleds get newer, they are getting a lot narrower with the Resistance Spec on the Grip Warmers. That being said, what is within spec and what still works may be entirely different. So, ... Like I said, this may be a good way to go.

I turned the grip warmers to off position the snipped the wire at the switch no check engine light. I hooked my factory grips to the battery with a fuse and resistor and switch that came from the hot grip kit now they get nice and hot.
