I'm just wondering how many RX1, Warrior owners have had to replace their exhaust donuts and how many miles before they had to? It seems to be quite the problem with the Apex's. I noticed some muffled backfiring occasionally last year but performance didn't seem to be affected. Might look into it later this summer. Thanks for any replies.

Sorry wrong section.I moved the post.

I asked my dealer about this issue since I bought an '07 Apex GT last December and it now has 1800 miles on it.

My dealer said that he has only seen a few failures and that the problem is not nearly as widespread as everyone on the internet says it is.

I hope that he is right and that I am not one of the few with this issue. I wonder if anybody has actually done a survey and determined how common this problem is?

I can tell you that my last sled was a 04 warrior that I bought new. I put just over 7000 miles on the sled and never had a exhaust gasket problem.Traded in the warrior for a 07 attack GT and after 3200 miles my exhaust gaskets needed to be changed. The exhaust pipes were fine but the dounut gaskets were junk. I ride the same trails now as I did on the warrior so thats my story. Whats your dealer say about the bad drive axle bearings? Never heard of it :drink:

Your driving style seems to have a lot to do with it...meaning most aggressive DITCH BANGERS and HIGH speed riders will need to change them between 3000 and 4000 miles and riders who take it easy or a slower paste (tourer's) seem to get much better life out of them...

I have an '08 APEX LTX and had to get them changed at 3000 miles...and by what my dealer told me is that '08 have a extra support on the "Y" pipes and still doesn't seem to help...I'm not a over aggressive rider either, I drive a lot of HIGH speed, lakes and rail beds...so I think its a HEAT build-up thats causing these famous donuts to BAKE and they get brittle and fall apart.

exhaust

You guys are dreaming. At 4000 miles you'll need exhaust gaskets and if you're not lucky y pipes at a cost of 700 bucks plus gaskets if you don't have the extended warranty. Lucky, I had the extended warranty, and
it was covered.

Perhaps it was a good thing that I listened to my wife and purchased 4 extra years of warranty!

I disagree. this is definately a case by case issue.
I beat the living piss out if my sled and just checked my gaskets at 5000 miles.
still look like new.
i have a ton of other things to fix but the exhaust aint one of them.

Two Rx1s and three apexes over the past few years. All have had donut issues around 3-4 thousand miles. I agree it is related to high speeds and heat. We run pretty hard, so we replace donuts as a part of regular maintenance. Always are in poor shape by 4 thousand. Lost a y pipe at 6 thousand.

I changed out the donuts on my turbo RX-1 at 4240 miles or 6850 kms when going with a rearmount MCX turbo kit. One donut was shot, one was worn and the last two had very little wear on them. Sled now has 8550 miles or 13750 kms, I have not had any problem with leaking exhaust when turboed so far.

2004 WARRIOR= 4,600 MILES, 2005 RX-1=3,800 MILES, 2006 APEX5,200 MILES, 2007 RAGE 6,400 MILES. These are the miles that I had to replace donuts on each sled. Usually when I replaced them, one was totally gone, two about half used up, and one still like new.

2006 Rage donuts toast at 4500 miles but we do run hard & fast. Seems to me you need to check at between 4000 & 5000 miles to make sure you don't break the pipes. Emissons warranty good for 3 years read your manual. Then YES takes over for donuts. I'm surprised Yamaha doesn't have a fix but then again not expensive warranty part for them unless a pipe goes.

Just changed my Friday night. Sled has about 4300 miles and they were definately on there way out. They hadn't completely failed, but they powered as I took them out. Worst part is they you have to just about disassemble the sled to get to them. Serviability on Yamaha's is definately an issue - thank goodness you don't have to service them that much.

Just changed mine out last week at 2993 miles. One #3 cylinder I beleieve was totally shot with just some braided wire left. The other three were worn but still serviceable. For all the work to get to them I changed out all four. Also found a slight amount of wear in the steer in joint at bottom of steering shaft so changed that also while there.

2007 Attak GT and 2 of my donuts were toast, one semi-bad, one ok at 2,500 miles. Also had to change out one of the Y pipes due to it being cracked at the flange by the donut. Thankfully I bought the 5 year YES and it was all covered. It IS a problem whether Yamaha recognizes it or no. More of a problem on the '06 and newer sleds that are using the titanium Y pipes. Hopefully they come up with some sort of update so us as the end-user dont have to suffer.
