Thanks, yeah I was surprised with the heat as well but it is consistent with the results of Bugbear's mod. The luggage deck gets too hot to hold your hand there if travelling at higher speeds so it would definitely melt vinyl carrying bags, etc. Yes, ventilation would be my next step - I'm thinking about adding some vents on each side towards the rear. I wanted to see if I'm keeping this in place first, before cutting holes - but I'm pretty sure this mod will help because there is not so many things for the snow/ice to stick to underneath and the bottom side of the shield stays cold from the snow.

Yes, it is nerve wracking to start cutting here and there not knowing if the results will be what we expected. So I guess there was some rhyme and reason for Yamaha to leaving the exhaust open to the detriment of ice accumulation; it's either that or burn down the sled. But we're not engineers and we're doing their job. LaLaLa

What about cutting a couple of holes beside the exhaust tip?

Ahah - that new mooseman in your avatar is pretty nerve wracking too! Didn't know you ther for a minute.

Update:

Have ridden in some pretty cold conditions (-20C) in the last two days and there is no significant ice build-up around the shield. I still get some around the upper wheels but I think that is common. Will post some pics later. Snow in the forecast for Saturday so maybe I'll get to work on the shield and try to eliminate the noise I'm getting (either flexing or the track rubbing or both I think). I also need to remove it to check to see if the wrap and tape are holding up..

Some pics of exhaust inspection and reinstallation to reduce track rubbing on the shield. Moved the shield closer to the muffler and now the track is not striking the shield on bumps, etc. Everything seems to be holding up fine after about 2200Km. Only thing I noticed was glue melted off the tape and dripped unto the shield.
Now that I have proven this mod to be successful, the next step will be put in some vent holes to reduce the heat build-up on the rear deck.

Your efforts are definitely paying off. Just the heat issue to deal with. Since the heat seems to be coming from the muffler, what about double wrapping it with the header wrap?

Yes thanks, it was well worth the effort. More wrapping should help (although not much clearance on the top side of the muffler now) and the end of the muffler could be wrapped as well - maybe next season.

A couple of comparison pictures with tunnel icing of mine vs another sled I saw on the trail the same day. I am quite pleased with the results of this mod to say the least. Those pics of the other sled bring back the bad memories of the heavy ice load, noise, track rub, etc. before installing the exhaust extension, shield and heat wrap!

I have not seen this mentioned so here I go. Here in Sweden Yamaha is selling a extension for the exhaust system.

Is that really a Yamaha accessory - it looks a bit crude? I don't think it will work very well or at all without a shield - been there and tried that.
Do you have a link to Yamaha Sweden with the item listed? It is interesting though that they may be actually finally admitting that a problem exists. Naw I looked at the pics again and I think someone is kidding ya; that can't be from Yamaha!

No picture of the item but here is a link to Yamaha Sweden with a accessories package for Venture MP. One of the items in the package is the exhaust extension (Förlängning avgasrör).

I just started looking at this snowmobile now and in my look into problems I can expect I found this problem with the exhausts. I also found this thread on a Swedish snowmobile forum where this extension from Yamaha is mentioned. Note that this thread is two years old, so the extension from Yamaha has been available on the Swedish market for at least two years. When I checked with my local Yamaha retailer they told me that the price of just the extension was 900 SEK (140 USD).

So I ended up buying a MP and it already had the extension on it, and this is the formal extension from Yamaha.

Winter no 2 with the "Swedish style exhaust tip" in place on my MP. It really makes a huge difference, less ice and less exhaust drone. Don't think it's invented by Yamaha in Japan...

version of Swedish exhaust extension

I have been running my own version with no shield or wrap and it has improved things dramatically.
