Well my sled season is winding down, just under 3,400 miles on my 2013 Apex XTX. I've noticed that as of late, my fuel mileage was down to apprx. 10-11mpg, when I was getting 13-15 mpg earlier in the season and was chalking it up to the recent heavy snow dumping in central NY/ Old Forge Area. Also my top end was down, and didn't seem to have the mid-range grunt as it did earlier in the season. I started with an oil change and then moved on to checking the EXUP valve to check the alignment, when upon taking the cover plate off, I discovered that one of the cables was snapped/broke and the other was not seated in the hole/roller of the valve. Additionally, one of the bolts had backed out of the EXUP, and there looks like it had been exposing a lot of the area to excessive heat as everything had a dark rust color to it, due to not seating the copper gasket against the mating surface, and leaking gases.

I took pics on my phone and will try to upload them as soon as I can. I showed them to my dealer today, upon passing me to his "Lead Mechanic" who first off wanted to know what possessed me to even look at the EXUP as it is in the sled quite a ways. Why would I even be looking at it. I explained the mileage issue and my top speed issues. Told me that he never saw anything like that happening. I had to go out of my way to explain, I have not "toyed" with the EXUP before, only they were to have supposedly looked at it, at the 500 mile service that I had them do, as I figured I would let them do the first one. They told me they would be looking into it to see if it will be covered under warranty and would be calling me back. I probably just want the parts and will be doing it myself, as they just recently became a Yamaha dealer, apprx. 2 years ago,(Polaris dealer initially for years and now do both). Never got the phone call, but tomorrow is another day.

I will post back if warranty/dealer take care of it, or don't. They want me to bring it down once the parts come in so they can look it over, and see if they can discover what "may" have caused this.

What a question to ask "why would you look in there" my answer would have been because I just spent 14,000 plus and my sled is not running right genius

Ha! I kinda of was on the same page as you regarding that, like I should have no reason, and woe is me, I should just drop it off to the dealer and let them figure it out on my dime.

Arctic Cat quality control!!!! A glimpse into our future LOL.

x2 thats the most rediculous thing to say to a customer...I would have packed tent and walked..and yes its covered...if they even hint otherwise ..walk to the next better dealer..

I kept thinking...what could cause this...then it dawned on me...what if it filled with water and froze...then the motor tried to turn it and it ripped the cable out...or the butterfly inside froze...just a thought

I was wondering what the Exup might or might not do if it failed. I have lost some top end and my buddy who has an 08 Apex GT LTX beat me in several runs last weekend. Two weeks before I was beating him by 4-6 sled lenghts. Seeing how my sled is only a month old I think I may have to have my dealer look into it.
My mileage was better than his as well by as much as 1.25 gallons per fill up. Mostly I was better by a half gallon on a half tank. Kind of off sets the price of paying for premium!

Well FINALLY got my sled back from the dealer today!!! Been sitting there since Mid-late April. I called a couple of weeks ago to find out what the holdup was...working on the summer toys, yada, yada yada...not pleased with the customer service. I brought it to them w/ all the body panels off, so should've been about an hours worth of labor to change the cable...but that's another story. Here are some great pictures after I got it home of the EXUP cables not having their lock nuts tightened down, and their fine job of aligning my EXUP...And Oh yea, it was all covered under warranty or they just didn't charge me....!

I had that same problem years ago on my SRX when the power valves came out. My guess is the same thig happened when you brought it to them for your first service. If the cables are adjusted too tight or if they are not tightened down, they will break. Period. They probably didn't adjust them right the first time and that's why they broke. And yes, it WILL affect your mileage and performance.
You should be good to go now, because you are finishing the service....
