Well guys. Today I just broke down and could not take it anymore. We got 2.5 inches of snow here in Northern Illinois so I felt I had to take out the New GT for a 20 mile test ride in the 40 acre bean field near our house. See my questions and comments below. I have always riden Yamaha an my last two sleds were a 2002 Viper and a 98 SRX
1. Question: How do you adjust up or down the position of the throttle kill switch assembly? Mine just is a bit to angled upward for my liking. I do not see the familiar Phillips screw that you normally use.
2. Question: What is the best suggestion for a covering for the gas tank so your knees do not wear/scratch the gas tank cover?
3. Question: I bottomed out the rear skid twice at 60 miles an hour on a roller in the field. I put the electronic shock all the way up and this seemed to help. Is there a general concensus that the rebound or something needs to be adjusted tigher for trail riding?
4. Comment: With 2.5 inches of snow, eight inches of carbides and 144 picks the turning is just a bit hard! Hopefully we will get some more snow soon so I can find out if this sled really does turn better than the viper. Anyone experience better turning than the Viper yet this Month?
5. Comment: Handlebar and Thumb warmers do not work in my opinion period. On Full High for both the bars and thumb they are barely even noticeable. 19 degrees, medium windshield, no wind, and I can barely tell they are on with my bare hands on them. This is very very troubling. I personal phone call to my dealer tomorrow and one to Yamaha to register this problem.
6. Comment: Engine power is baffling. This thing will pull your arms off with the amount of torgue it has. I only hit 75 in the field but it just keeps pulling and pulling. Way faster than my Viper was.
7. Question: How long will it take to get used to the taller feel of the sled and four stroke engine braking? Kinda nervous. It slows down real fast, but I wonder how this will be on the tight twisty trails with friends running 2 strokes. The throttle is so jerky on the GT 4 stroke.
8. Question: I know it seems dumb, but I don't see the answer in the manual. On Starting - Do you start it and wait for the red light to go off on the dash? Once the red light is off it it is warmed up right? If it runs too long the overheat yellow light will come on right? Just wanted to check.
Overall, need more snow. Ride is super tight, comfortable, very fast. Quite! and no STINK!@ With all the vintage Yamahas I have in my collection, I almost hate the thought of starting them because of the 2 stroke stink. This 4 stroke ride is something else!

Jon, yes the engine is warm enough and ready to ride once the red light goes out.
With that much carbide in that little amount of snow, its not surprising that you think it steers a little heavy.

With more seat time the new riding position will feel natural. As to four stroke engine braking, you cannot ride it like a two stroke. Don't just snap the throttle on or off but modulate or feather it. Just squeeze the throttle on slowly during acceleration and slowly release it on decel. Let the engine slow you rather than grabbing a lot of brake. You have valves now and need to re-learn riding technique.
Now go out and practice.

After we get some decent snow....i think many of these issues will go away, you will have to get used to the engine braking....and you will, and use it to your advantage=coming into turns, down off of steep grades or just plain slowing down. The one issue you might have, could be the handwarmers....but i'm sure yamaha will look after it if enough people complain.

2 philips head screws on the front side of the throttle block in line with the kill switch.

I too am in N. Illinois, and I too just got back from riding. 15 miles on smooth trails in a forest preserve. I'm completely impressed with the GT. The only weight that I noticed was my own as I clung for dear life during hard acceleration. I noticed alot of ski lift, that I'm going to overlook until I ride in better conditions. All in all, I"m really happy I switched from Doo. ( my buddy on his 800 rev was mad that he didn't switch as well) Toby

Ok guys if to much ski lift or to much ski pressure,go to your little plastic card that helps you understand how to adjust up or down your transfer rod, loosen up the lock nut,and either turn the knob out toward the skis to allow transfer (light feel to skis) and tighten it in toward back of track toward rear bumper to reduce your transfer ( no ski lift) if you do the no ski lift it will rail around corners because it takes pressure from the rear of the track, lets it slide around and the front to bite, now do the opposite to have ski lift or do wheelies!!
Question #2
I'll take question #2, to protect the fuel tank shroud finish you can do a few things.
Some are using a Yamaha tank bag.
You could get some 3M clear film or any other type of protective film of your choice and place it in the areas that your knees may contact the shroud.
Or, like me, you could contact Skinz Protective Gear or check out their website for some nice knee pads that attach to the shroud. Their website is:

Thanks for all the advise so far. I got the throttle assembly adjusted and will be looking for some 3m tape for starters.

IT wont take long to get used to the engine braking..
Wait till you get alot more snow before toying with the sled.. I weigh more than you and think they rear suspension is perfect! and steering great! (ive got more snow than you)
I dont think the sled will outhandle your viper on smooth very windy trails.. but when it gets rough.. it will definilty out handle it!

Yes, learn to modulate your throttle with small thumb movements, might take you 100 miles or so, but you will get it.
3. bottoming Add more preload to your spring. This should be a threaded spanner nut and lock nut. Shock is threaded on the GT

mmsnowbeast- thanks for the feedback. What effect would the limiter strap have on ski lift/weight trasfer? This is my first yami, and I'm still trying to figure out how everything in the skid works together. Thanks
