first valve adjustment?

I would say 12,000 to 15,000 for RX-1 & 16,000 to 20,000 for Apex. Just going off data I've locked up in this OCD head of mine...BTW, I only have OCD with snowmobiles...and motorcycles...and hunting...and maybe even fishing...oh, and blondes...or brunettes...

i think im gonna leave it, but whats involved in doing valve adj? i work on diesels mostly cats and do top end adj quite frequently, is the valve cover gasket reusable? is there a link to the procedure? torque specs? im not gonna bring to dealer!!

No idea on the details. Was well worth the 250 to have my shops do it. They are very meticulous and stand behind their work.

i hear ya! but like doing things myself! especially after reading a recent post about dealer forgot to tighten oil drain plug!! also there is no yami dealer around the corner , pita to trailer hour or more to and from.

My Yamaha R1 Streetbike had 28,000mi and I Wrang its neck with no valve adj ! I would always be up top rpm 16,000+ . No issues ! Ran great! Why some Apex sleds need adj I just don't know ?? If it runs great , don't touch .

It's not hard to do, but you need different size shims. The dealer has a whole kit. You can measure each one & order individual shims.

Habs1, If you haven't seen the post(s) by RXrider (the guy in Norway), check out this TY site. 4-stroke sled garage, Rxriders turbo garage engine rebuild. Valve shim measurement and adjustment starts at post # 1149. Sounds like a person would need an assorted shim thickness selection and a lot of patience! Make SURE the cams are in time. Best thing about RXriders posts, he has pictures!

alright nice! ill check it out, but thinking im gonna leave it for now anyway, but would be nice to know whats up when it is due! thanks

If it starts hard, do it the valves are likely tight. My old man's apex with 19k just had them adjusted for the first time and 17 of 20 valves were out of spec. 2 were almost tight.

Just thought i would share my eperience! 06 apex gt 16000km current mileage. I started to get hard starting when cold last season. If it started at -20 c it would idle really slow to the point of using the throttle to keep it going. Warm engine ran great started great. I decided to check the valves this summer. Sure enough most of the exhaust valves were tight. All intake were on the tight side of spec. I ended up adjusting all the valves 2 shim sizes smaller on most of the valves to get me on the loose side of spec. Not much snow here yet but i have left it outside on -20 c nights and it starts great. Exhaust note has changed sounds much crisper. Hits 1500 rpm right away and gradually picks up over 2000 rpm within a couple seconds. Last season it would start reach 1500 rpm and slowly drop to 1000 rpm and eventually stall. It would only do this in -15 or colder. If your are experiencing hard starting when cold check your valves there tight.

will do! thing is this winter sucks and i usually keep in in my heated garage overnights! if i get the chance ill leave out n see, but left it out for 3 nights last weekend sleddin in mi and it started normal, it always has kind of went to a lower idel then picks up , it kind of does its own thing and is good to go! but last weekend the coldest night was mabe -10-12 mabe, ill keep closer eye on the cold starts! so sounds like these engines still run fine needing adjustment but most people when they chcked em it needed it?
