We(canuckians)must submit a bill of sale with vin # to the us border 72 hours in advance to import any motorized vehicle. It is a 100% legit request. What harm can anyone possibly do to you by knowing the vin when you have the title &/or registration?

U can fax the vin to the border for him, then he wont have your vin. But the buyer has to have the vin at the border 72 hour before he can bring sled across the border.

And the fact that he needs the vin to put insurance on it, if he commits to buying it.

You need to go on line to get a RIV number 1st, they will by pass the 72 notice because it is a New Sled [CSA Approved Stuff] Some states do not have titles, so the Regisration will be required and a billl of sale with the sellers signature. You will NOT be able to insure the sled till it has gone to Canadian Tire [one of the inspection places] to be approved as being upto date for ALL CSA STANDARDS. Then you can reg the sled once the second part of the RIV has been filled out.
BTW....Be EXTRA EXTRA carefull with the VIN Number as they have commonly found errors. Take a Picture of the Vin Number on the sled to help assit you on your sale, I have incountered problems twice with the wrong Vin Number being written down, once even the regisration had it wrong as well, no one caught it till it was at the border.

What would be the issues be with an American bringing his sled into Canada and then selling it to a Canadian? You could bypass all the border crap, then get a RIV number and the proper inspection, then register it at the license bureau and pay the taxes. I brought a used sled up from the states 2 years ago into Canada and the process was pretty simple. On the Canadian side I declared buying a used sled, at the customs office at the border I showed them the bill of sale and the previous owners ownership, they filled in all the paperwork and I paid the GST and they sent me on my way. Must have taken 10 minutes. The vin# off the sled was used to contact Yamaha Canada to get e recall clearance letter. Did that after I bought the sled, should have done my due diligence before buying the sled, fortunately it worked out for me.
I've personally bought 3 sleds from the US and not once have I ever sent notice to the US border. Just showed up at the Cnd side with my paperwork in hand paid my riv and gst and away I went. Just did one two weeks ago.

x's 2 ....
no need to stop / notify US unless you plan on bringing the sled back across the border to the US ...
pay RIV and GST at the border (Cdn) and provincial tax when you register it.

You gotta absolutely 100% stop at us customs to get your bill of sale or NVIS stamped. If you don,t do that here canada customs sends you back to us customs where they get really pissed at yopu & then you need to find a place to store the sled for 72 hours. In my area this is the 100% law!!!!

I have purchased all my sleds plus have buddy who works for us customs listen to TURK he is right at this border crossing they will make you wait the 72hrs before they stap the paper also on the clearance letter and Yamaha dealer in the states can give you that letter they just have to look up the Vin# and make sure there are no recals
