I installed the trailtank on my 08rtx this year. I don't think it has caused any additional overheating problems. I looked at an xtx at the dealer and didn't see the tunnel heat exchanger. I've rode with several other make and model sleds and I'm the only one running hot. Not good for Yamaha's reputation not to mention the harassment I take. The only fix I can think of is to remove all the plastic or add the heat exchanger. I'll probably cough up the $300+ and buy the heat exchanger. Are any of the 09 xtx sleds overheating?

Mine over-heats, usually at lower speeds when there isn't as much air flowing through the radiator. I have ice scratchers and they help. However its still kinda a PIA when it gets hot.
Probably will put a MTX cooler on it. Anyone know if Yamaha sells a heat exchanger kit that would include the hoses etc. Or do you have to buy all the pieces seperately?

It's a kit. This is from South Seattle Sports Plaza. I'm going to try to get more info from Yamaha before buying it (directions).

Thanks grizztracks
It's a little spendy, but I think I'll try it. Since I ride it in mountain conditions, climbing, low speed through tight trees, etc. Might even gain me a few HP, since I'm pretty sure she runs a little warm under those conditions. Fan comes on quite often.

I had the same problem all week on my 08 rtx. Trails were very hard packed but the temp was around 15*F. It eventually went off when I got into some tight twisty woods. Does the yammi have an auto shut down if it gets too hot??

Yes BUT only if it is stopped/stationary/idling. If you are moving and don't stop, expensive repairs will happen eventually.

should you stop as soon as the light comes on and let it idol,
or shut it down?

If possible, I ride harder which forces more air in. I also try to catch fresh snow in the process. I'm normally on tight trails and hate to stop so I push it probably farther than I should. Normally I can get it cooled down. I've thought about installing a second sensor with an indicator that would come on 5 to 10 degrees after the OEM light. The first would warn you and the second would indicate that you need to stop. I'm not sure off the exact temperature you'd want the second sensor. I believe Yamaha is being a little conservative with the temp light but I'm not sure what temp these engines can safely run at. I'm going to install the tunnel exchanger this summer. I Hate to spend the money but a blown engine will cost alot more.
anyone have the stock xtx coolant capacity spec? just wondering if it holds more than the 08 rtx.

XTX has the same cooling system as the RTX.
I picked up a MTX tunnel heat exchanger from Scott at Diamond S mfg. He has some take-offs. Then bought the hoses from my dealer. Saved some coin that way.

Was your total cost under $263 which is the cost of the kit from South Seattle Sports? I've order several times from them and they are normally the cheapest and never had problems with orders. I'm definitely interested in doing it cheaper if he has more takeoffs. Did you install it? Just wonder how involved the job is and if there's anything to be aware of. I have a trailtank(09 version) and I've heard the earlier tanks caused problems. Any picts of the install?

Much cheaper
$90 for the cooler, $75 for the hoses and some clamps. I still need to buy a piece of pipe, and some more clamps at the local hardware store. To replace #s 70 through 73, in the pic. #71 pipe looks to be just a tee pipe that they cap the small fitting off. Yamaha wants over $30 for that piece of pipe
I firgure I can do the whole thing for around $175 bucks.
No pics yet, still waiting for parts, and my sled is at the dealer for some work:-(. Not sure how hard of a job it is to do yet. Most likely will have to drop the skid, and remove the fuel tank. Shouldn't be to bad though
Looks like you just replace hose #55 with the ones in the kit. So that the MTX cooler is plumbed in series between the radiator outlet and the front heat exchanger inlet.
I think Scott has some more coolers. I placed a WTB add here on TY, and he responded back saying that had 5 of them at the time.

Thanks for the info mtnviper. I found their website and sent an email. The price is right even if I need to buy additional parts. Keep us posted on your progress.
I rode 100 miles on minimal trails, thin and wet at 45 degrees today,. No overheating on my 09 XTX.

How and where does that MTX cooler mount???
I don't have overheating issues and the collants stock...but was thinking the rear cooler would help the ice build up

I can't ride in 40+ weather unless I'm on wide open trails getting plenty of air pushing through. I'm going to pull the sensor tomorrow to check the actual temperature it turns the light on. There must be something different!
