Got a tank from Seth last week on Thursday. Here is some pictures of it side by side with the stock tank and then installed. I would say the swap for an average mechanically inclined person would be 2-3 hours. I would also recommend getting a new rubber gasket to seal the fuel pump assembly as the original one likes to expand. If you don't have a new gasket wipe the old one off with a paper towel and throw it in the freezer for a few hours and it will come back down to size.

What about swapping the heat shield from the stock tank to the trailtank?? :dunno:
 
Does this require that you eliminate the Dzus fasteners on the shrouds after the new tank is installed ? Do they give you any Duct tape to cover up the edges of the white plastic tank cover? Sorry, a little sarcastic there. What is the advertised capacity of the new tank? ;)! ;)!

Skyboz, I don't think you'll be able to take the heat shield from the OEM tank simply because I think it'll tear possibly (this is just my opinion, I did not try to take the heat shield off the OEM tank).

Yes you eliminate the dsuz fasteners on the top shroud and the rear side panel mounting position for a phillips head screw with shouldered washer. The advertised capacity is 10.4 gallons.

I just ordered one. I'm not happy about this. that sucks you have to bust out a screw driver to open the hood. There has to be a alternative. ?
 
I was thinking the same thing. I guess if you want the fuel range you have to give up conveniance, fit and finish, ect. I would be a little spooked to not have a heat sheild under the front of the tank also. A little foil tape goes a long way. Not trying to bash anyones purchase, just seems like not alot of thought into the details. What do you expect for $10k? LOL #$%&* :o|
 
Thank you very much for the pics SRXSPEC. I have been waiting for someone to have purchased the trail tank and mounted to the sled. It looks terrific for aftermarket. If some have a hissy fit over the Philips screws, then obviously these are riders not wanting to go further than 90 - 100 miles on a tank of fuel. Personally, I would like to have some distance rather than worry about coming out of the hills before the RX-1's for fuel. An additional 25 miles and having to carry a Gerber multi-tool for the Philips screws is fine with me. Doesn't everyone carry a multi-tool on them for emergencies???????
 
Hey guys.

Thanks to SRXSPEC for taking the time to put the pics together and post them. I appreciate all the feedback + and --. We are looking at an option for using the Dzus fasteners with our tank.
There is not a simple solution (or we would have done it in the first place) for using Dzus fastener assemblies in the rotational molding polyethylene process. Don't expect all of you to understand the complexities of this without the plastics molding experience. Alot of thought has gone into the details. We tried and tried to get information from Yamaha about the specs and source of the heat shield insulation tape. Unsuccessfully obviously. We will continue to look for the source of this material.
As far as the Philips pan head screws, I would replace them with a button head torx or allen myself. We just decided in production we would go with the most common head/tool combo. Especially given the need to carry a tool outside of the hood to remove the hood. There are several fit and finish details I would have liked perfected. We lose a bit of control of fit and finish from our hand crafted model to the digitizing-cnc model machining-cast aluminum cavity creating-plastic molding process shrinkage calculating series of events.
Anyway...
