Get me back on a Yamaha

If your looking for boosted nytro or apex performance the sidewinder will get you there will so few mods its scary. That said mine has been in the shop 2 weeks with 388 miles on it, there are definite quirks, if you commit to the sled keep up on all those things and it will be fine, also boosted sleds are hard on stuff like chains, gears, drivers, etc. You have to be good with maintenance. That all said I am so close to pulling out my half parted apex and building that sled up again. It was by FAR the most fun sled I have ever had. I trail ride same areas as you and with a 151 crossover track (Now 153 BTX SW when its running :( ) and never had a issue. The impulse turbo on a apex was a game changer for the sled! So back to your question if you are looking for mainly OEM and not in the mood for customization go SW, if you like modding the sled the look for a impulse apex out in the mountains and convert to a trail sled like I did. The secret with the impulse is it moved all the fuel under and behind you, the skis were so light it felt like it had power steering compared to my SC apex. Power of the 4 banger and sounds are still much better then the SW even on my 280hp flash. The apex limitations were also quite well known and I spent a lot of time with maint in the summer but never lifted the hood once the snow flew.

Thanks everybody, I am still a bit on the fence but leaning towards a stock power sidewinder LE with less than 1k miles and warranty. I am not picky on track length but like the better shocks and warranty length. I have gone through plenty of the sidewinder section on here and while they have plenty of issues I am not scared off yet. I mean I have been riding skidoo summit 800/850s for 8 years and was prepared to fix issues as they came up, ironically never had a issue even on my modified sleds.

I will say that if a Apex XTX pops up for a great deal I might jump on that too.

Don’t want to turn this into a WTB thread but will be looking for a sidewinder.

Well I really like my 12 apex xtx for trail riding it’s my second apex and with proper maintenance it will last dam near forever.
Don't forget about the EPS, it is awesome!

Well I am at a point in my life that I am ready to come back to my Yamaha roots and trail riding. Been riding the mountains for 10 years now and have owned many mountains sleds and ridden all over the Rockies. I am ready to purchase a trail sled for trail riding in WI/UP and just rent a mountain sled for the 1-2 trips a year. I have been out of the Yamaha game since 2009 when I built very custom Nytro Mountain sled but prior was on Triple trail sled since 2000.

So I have been lurking on this site and am caught up enough that AC quality is not what Yamaha quality was and that Yamaha even with the partnership with AC still needs tweaks for ride comfort and handling. But being a DIY guy I have no problem making adjustments on sleds for suspension or handling. Also a huge fan of reliability which is why I am here and a trail sled means 10,000+ miles without having to rebuild the engine IMO. Also, am a slightly aggressive trail rider that prefers turns over grade when picking trails.

So with a budget just short of 10k and a plan to purchase in the April-August time frame what Yamaha sled should I purchase? Used Sidewinder, Apex, or Viper?

Miss TY too, TY is the best forum out there as I have been on plenty others.
I have not ridden a Sidewinder so no help, have ridden a Viper LTX DX, and hands down love both of my Apex's, the XTX more because of longer track and EPS!

Hello just something to consider. I’m probably going to sell my’15 stxdx, just talked to my dealership and they still don’t have the parts I ordered for the chain case repair! So would you be happy with a sled that’s in peices, now for 2 weeks and pending? Seriously this sled has spent more time broken than driven. Think seriously what you next machine could be. I am not a happy Viper owner

Backordered parts seem to be a problem; my stepson's primary clutch blew up, and the major part that they need to fix it is backordered until mid April. I checked on line and realized that there were two different part numbers, one for the specific part, and one for a "kit" that contained that part and some other parts (some of which we did not need). The kit was available now. Our choice was, the season is done, or for $100 we have another month of riding. Needless to say, we ordered the kit. I don't know what part(s) you need, but you might want to check and see if there is another way of getting what you need. Our dealer is great, but if we had accepted his "word" for part availability, we would be done.

I would buy what I need from Travis at BOP, no way should anyone be down in the middle of the very short season!

I went from the proaction triples, to a 06 Apex, 07 Attack FPP turbo, 15 turbo Viper, 17 LTX LE Sidewinder. I'd never go back at this point in my life, I can see me wanting a sit and steer type touring sled in another 15 or so years, but not right now.

Riding my xtx ape tonight and am loving every minute of it!
I am 59, this XTX may be my last sled, :dunno: of course if they put the Apex motor in the Venture, that would be the perfect retirement sled. LaLaLa

I just got back from a 4 day ride in the UP, conditions were top notch and very low sled traffic (due to plenty snow in lower or people ending season early?) and rode 608.5 miles 493.8 of those by myself.
Why you ask? My buddies always back out anymore, my wife only wanted to ride one day 114.7 and I am addicted to ride.
Again you ask why would you ride alone that many miles? Because I can, it is a YAMAHA!
