Good bye boost!

boost need a complete setup, not engine power alone.

Need proper suspension, proper clutchs, proper fuel.. then it will rock.

weight reduction is part of the setup in a mountain sled... stock they are WAY WAY WAY too heavy...

power is nothing with no traction...

Yeah, way too many people stepped into boost trying to take a stock sled, and make it perform like the boost sleds in the videos...

problem is, those also have all the suspension, and helicopters to move them out if something goes boom, or bang...

general rule of thumb like buying a good rifle, spend the same amount on the scope as the rifle...Well, boost is the same, whatever you spend on your turbo set up (turbo, gauges, clutching, etc.) spend that same amount on suspension and track to get it to perform...

Hint, if your total boost budget is not around $10k, your not going to look anything like the videos... Just My Humble Opinion

There is a Lot to be said for Gas and Go with a short season like this.

That is why I have a Race sled and a Trail sled.

You all Know my Race sled.

My Trail sled is All Stock 09 XR 1200 Doo sans a Custom 321 Stainless Header I built for it in to the Stock Muffler.

It burns 87 octane fuel, weighs 500 lbs, gets 16 MPG, it corners like a Laborghini, Takes the bumps like a motocross bike, and all I hear is the wind when riding.

I have had a turbo kit sitting here for 2 seasons and I just can't get myself to install it in fear of upsetting the Awesomeness of the sled.

The Low boost Packages are the most trouble free of all the kits and it is the HP junkie in all of us that sometimes gets the best of us LOL

This is Definitely a Hobby for the Hobbyist who loves to Tinker between rides.

Ted.

Well boys,

I give up. Too much time and money into my MPI Apex. Way too many issues for only 1700 kms and 3 years of part time use. Awesome sled when it ran and couldn't be touched on the hills but 3 days of hard riding just about kills me and I'm a big guy in good shape. When I first got into the boost game I really thought I could just spend the initial money and time getting the sled dialed in and just ride it. But no, something always comes up, even with good maintenance.

So I thank everyone for their constant help and insight. This site has any info that a guy could need for the Yammies. And to all that are riding them, good luck to you and enjoy. Hopefully my situation is just a rarity.

The final few straws for me was my fuel pump relay freezing up.(Not a boost issue I realize). And my SC is starting to sound rough now. Not to mention I go through sliders like some guys go through underwear! And there is a whole host of issues that never seem to be solved. I just can't trust this sled when I'm in the backcountry anymore. It also didn't help that I got to try out the new Cat M8's in the hills. I now own a 2011 HCR. Thanks again!!!

I thought the same thing when i first boosted my attak but after the first month of tinkering with the sled i knew then that it wasnt a sled i was gonna use everyday so i ended up getting another sled and now i just use the attak when i feel the urge for a little extra power lol and use the apex as my everyday sled.

You hit the nail on the head. I would love to keep the Apex as a strictly mountain sled that isn't also a daily driver. I just can never relax when I'm riding it. I'm always hearing strange sounds or thinking it will leave me stranded somehow. But when she is running good, its the funnest sled I've ever been on. And it's pretty funny when you let one of your friends try boost for the first time. They just can't believe it when they are buying shirts with extra arm length on them.

I have ran sc sleds for 5 years,
apex 3 years , 2 nd year on a nytro, no issues but spent all the money up front to put togeather with all fuel upgrades , xtraverts , coolers etc.

The secret is make it run the best then back it down some boost and leave it there !

Don't always try to get extra or you will screw around more than you ride!

Man, you guys are getting me down! I'm just getting into this. I've got about 500kms on a stage I apex @ 5psi. It's great on the trails but by the time I get up top there's no boost left. I'm going to step it up to 10psi for the next trip but I'll have to try and keep it simple.

I've had this sled for 4 seasons and 6000kms and all of my riding buddies on 2smokes have burned a motor (a $3000 touch) or gotten new sleds.

muloth X2 :-)

My odo says 10000 miles or 16000 kilometers, the old girl is still going strong. But like you I have done all the small things to make it handle, be reliable, cut 80+ lbs of weight, rider forward, the works. It takes maint but it has never let me down on the trail, close once but made it home with the speedo bearing gone.

Maint before season, testdrive to check all systems when the snow flies, then gas and go at 22 lbs for the season.

Didn't take long for me to part out my rx1 turbo to buy a stock apex.

Backpacking the up and turning down boost with head shim was sad..... Along with constantly changing jets, adjusting, wrenching. That bender kit and I just had a love hate relationship thats for sure.

I have been riding with guys that have 200hp cat 4 strokes and sometimes feel I need to boost my apex............time will tell!

:exc:

I am lucky if i drive my boosted rx-1 4 times a year 660' at a time...& i am still tossing $$$ at it for little things.
My 2011 xtx with yamacharger(180 hp) puts a bigger grin on my face & it is truley gas & go.

Sounds like a Bender rear mount to me. I put over 6000 miles on a MCX rear mount and it was amazingly reliable, good on fuel, and the most fun I've ever had on a sled. There are way too many turboed sleds out there now, many of them in the hands of people that don't understand them well enough to be able to live with them, and, or able to handle them.

What fuel do you run with that yamacharger and 2011? That does sound like a nice running sled. Can you get by with 91? If it does knock will the dash flash at ya and let you know its pulling timing?

The Yamcharger is a cool addon on a stock Apex, have ridden one last season, great pull for a "stocker" :-)
