sweeet 2 more down!Blue Dave said:Well guys, the story just keeps getting better! My buddy got his '09 XP 800 R back from the dealer on Thursday with two new pistons and one new cylinder. He is still running the dealer installed head mod. I have also since found out that he has a few other "secret mods" that he is not discussing.
We took off yesterday up here at Lake Vermillion in northern MN and he made it a mile and a half! The coolant bottle was completely empty and the engine was only running on one cylinder.
He was obviously done for the weekend, so after we got him back the rest of our group took off riding. There was another XP 800 in the group. By the end of the day that '08 XP 800 burned down and also needed a tow back.
The '08 XP 800 had the same head mod as the '09 plus they both had an aftermarket "Y" pipe and silencer. I am not sure if the mods were directly responsible for the break downs but is seems that the XP 800's are certainly running on the edge of reliability from the factory and any performance mod pushes them over that edge.
It looks like I may need to invest in a mod of my own if I keep riding with these Doo guys, a tow hitch!

I probably would feel worse for these guys if they hadn't told me to "get used to seeing their tailights" before we took off on Friday morning. I never got a chance for a re-match with the '09 and the '08 was no problem for me all day right up until it blew up!

Well that makes it even better. It's been awhile since I have had a story like this being I still have my old trusty Viper which is getting old. I had things like this happen when the Viper was new against a ZRT600, XC800, ZR800,MXZ800.... another episode with my '01 SXR7 against my bro in laws XC600 which he was going to spank me but never could ..and way back with my red 600SX, which I took down numerous sleds of the time.....Ultras, XC600s, MXZ670's a ZRT600 and one of Brian Nelson's souped up Zr440s that was kitted over 600cc. For some reason I found it is better off you say nothing and let the others crow and just do it in the field...LOL!!
Glad you're having a good time!!

It sounds like these guys should leave thier sleds alone if they want them to last. Almost every time I've heard of a 2 stroke going down, it has been modified in some way...usually by some clown that doesn't know what he's doing.

I have not seen any Series 3 motor yet last from any type of internal motor mod being done to it... All the people that sell the motor mods say they are reliable, but I modded a few of them and they all blew up... Fuel has to be perfect and you can't hold them WFO... I cooked two motors from 2 different aftemarket companies as per their instructions and all they tell me was well you did something wrong. After they ported the cylinders and their heads and all I had to do was put them back to-gether. I even had the dealer install one set of mods and it did the same thing. All blew up within 100miles...

Yep, did just that on my Viper the second year I owned it with triple pipes. That's why the stock one is back on it. Stock it is very reliable and that's the way I like it when I go on long trips away from home. I kicked myself in the rear after it popped thinking....."what the He!! am I doing"? ....let's face it, in this day in age with turbos, etc.... you are never going to be the fastest unless you have VERY deep pockets.
