Hand Warmers Quit On 2010 XTX

Installed my Yamaheater from Rock last night. Got the grips cranking some serious heat now! Thanks Rock!

nytro xtx handwarmer

Yamaha is batting zero on the handwarmer issue. My 09 xtx has the worst handwarmers i have ever had on a sled! and when i complained they said they had no other complaints!! They flat out lied!!!!!!!!

How hard or easy is ROCKS Yamaheater kit to install on an 09 Nytro? My fingers still haven't thawed out...

I just recieved mine today and by the looks of it anyone can do it. It is a very clean looking unit. I will let you know tomorow!! :rocks:

Cool....Thanks...

I never had a chance to install the yamaheater last night. I didn't get home form work until 9:00 and the wife had other plans for me :o| I will definetly be installing them tonight as we are leaving on friday morning and look to put on at least 400 miles this weekend!! :-o Will definetly let you know how it goes. I did pull my covers off and have a quick peak and it looks straight forward as all of the wires needed for the plug and play are located in one spot in a "rubber boot". ;)!

I have a 2010 XTX as well. My left hand warmer works, but the right one does not. I only have 1100 kms on the sled so far. I called the dealer, and all he said was call back in a week because they will have to wait for a new grip. He said that there will be nothing left of the grip once they pull it off, and therefore have to wait for a new grip before they look at it.

Here is the best tip I can give you for the XTX handwarmers. Find someone on this site that has an 06 set of Apex bars with the grips installed on them. replace your stock bars with the the Apex bars and be done with it. The Apex bars have a little more diameter which I like. Direct plug in (If I remember correctly) Start the day out on 2 bars, just right, hands start to sweat and get cold? turn up to 3 bars, come out of an establishment and your hands are really cold? Turn up to 4 bars and feel the heat! 3400 trouble free miles. I'm sure the yamaheaters work well too but this is what I did and have the best warmers of the group hands down.

kkraus, that is just too easy! everyone would rather dig in to thier wiring installing this and that or order kits. I did the exact same as you on my 09 as well as two of my friends sleds and we can't put the heat past half or my hands get too hot. too simple, original 06 bars = hot hands, plug and play = too easy. not to discredit Rock for all the hard work he did, his kit has had nothing but great reviews, just another easy option.

The Stator/Magneto in the Nytros is usually rated at 32.8A (460W)
(The Apexes are slightly larger yet close.)

You are starting with a 32.8A current supply.

The Major current loads (approximate from service manual) on your sleds are:
EFI 5A
Lighting 10A
Signal 2A
Ignition 10A
Radiator Fan 5A
----------------------
Total Current Draw = 32A

This would appear to leave you with .8A to run your grips.
(And this is what the ECU is programmed to do.)
This gives you 5.6W per grip, not NEARLY enough to keep your hands warm, which is why your hands freeze.
In stock form, once in a while your grips warm up when the radiator fan is off, and almost shut off when the fan is on.

However, a 20% safety margin (10A) is build into the system to help prevent failures. (Very good thing.)

We use up to half (5A) of the safety margin to heat your grips with the YamaHeater.
That makes your grips 45W per grip for a total of 90W, THAT makes your grips nice & WARM.

At the same time, the YamaHeater output with the Booster is current limited to less than 5A, this is to help protect your stator from overload & early failure.

ROCKERDAN MOD:

The 06 bar swap you are speaking of is called the Rockerdan mod.
(He is the guy that came up with it. Really good guy!)
It works by lowering the resistance of the load and therefore greatly increasing the current to the grips.

It does definitely work & many have used it without issue.
There are a couple problems with it.
(Many have worried about damaging the ECU, however I haven't seen or heard of a failed ECU yet.)

The real concern is the stator.
I personally have seen a few stators fail from the mod.
Mainly because the possible current draw is about 14+A with the Rockerdan mod.
That is well above the 5A or so available for the grips.
It is also well beyond the safe current limit for your stator, making it easy to overload it & cause it to fail.
IE NOT goofproof.

Stators, like any manufactured part, vary widely in how much they can handle, that is why some last, while others fail.

The biggest problem is that any damage caused to the stator is cumulative, it simply keeps adding up until it fails.
Another problem is that the safety margin is not consistent.
It will vary widely from sled to sled.

The other issue is the lack of heated hooks.
(Your pinky's tend to freeze, so you tend to keep your hands crammed towards the center of the bars to try keep them warm.)

YAMAHEATER:

The YamaHeater uses your existing grips so you end up with Warm Pinky's.
(Had the early 06 bars & definitely like having the heated hooks much better now!)

It gives you a High Heat setting that actually works!
(Replaces your current "off" (zero bars) setting.)

On some sleds, they changed the grips to an even colder version (God knows why...)
Those have a booster built into the YamaHeater that makes ALL your settings warmer, including the factory settings.

One major advantage is that the output is current limited to less than 5A max.
This helps protect your Stator against overload and eventual failure.

Your YamaHeater settings are also much more usable, giving you a wide range of settings you can use, from very low to Nice & Warm. ;)!

Hope this helps!

Rock :-o

PS If your stator should fail, do not simply replace it with another stock one.
Have it re-built, and ask them to make it tougher, they can usually add 10% to the capability & therefore you have more safety margin available.
(You can't go too much over 10% without having to change other parts on your sled.)

Well, i got my yamaheater installed last night. Pretty straight forward, especially if you slow down and read the directions :o| Took it outside fired it up Holy mackinaw I got heat!!!! Just as advertised!! Can't wait to get out on the trail tomorow and give em a real test!!!! Thanks again Rock!!!! I will keep you posted!!

Can't waith till mine arrive. Ordered Monday and hoping to have them for Tomorrow or Sunday ride.

Well i managed to put 500 miles on with the yamaheater. Wow!! Warm hands!! After speaking with Rock he told me how easy it would be to add a set of aftermarket extended heaters so I can heat my hooks on my stock bars. I pick them up today and hopefully will get them on for the weekend. Thanks for the help Rock. Yamaheater rules  !!!

On my 2010 MTX, my left grip doesnt seem to be working all the time... and they are week when they do work. I havent brought it to the dealer yet, but I dont understand how Yamaha "addressed the issue" when they work about as good as my 07 apex did..
