I was wondering about porting my head on my apex talked to a guy in ontario he claims 22 HP more can run on pumped gas whats your thoughts

that's alot of material coming out if he's getting 22hp.
by porting, you just increase airflow and will need to re-jet or re-map the fueling of course. the more aggressive the porting is, it will be a little laggy to start, but will make up top end.
now if the head gets surfaced alot, your going to increase the compression. not sure the ratios for sleds but on a regular gas v8 let's say, 10-10.5:1 is about max before pinging occurs.
not sure if this helps?

Talk to Dave at Hurricane Performance. He is the only one I know of porting heads. I just know from standard engines that there is gains to be had by doing this.
These sleds already run around 10-10.5:1 compression stock It will make power. Thinking of doing this to my turbo sled......

I would like to see a dyno of this cause its hard to believe that just by jumping compression & advancing cam timing you would get 22hp. (this is not head porting) the head in its stock form will only flow so much Don't get me wrong there are good numbers to be made in porting the head with the right cam & intake system along with pipe what goes in must come out. I have been porting heads for quite some time now & not all heads need material removed to flow better in some cases it's the other way you may need to add material & get the right shape of the port to flow right this can only be done with a flow meter & some experimenting
I now of some guys that can get you big hp gains with porting but its not cheap. but these guys build racing bike/quad/sled/car motors everyday
Imo this guy is giving you false hope with this mod But I have been wrong before
hope this helps

I heard the same... There is no hp gain in porting even with cam changes. I think it would have been done by know by alot of guys if there was good reliable power to be made...
No offense but how could there be no gains in head porting? Just an example..but take a small block chevy head...do a nice valve job, blend the bowls, mild port work, mill it to bump the compression and you will make gains...engine builders have been doing it for years....why would it not work in this case...maybe not 22hp but 5-10 could be achievable...i think it's more of a cost thing as to why people don't commenly do it...cost is probably very high vs the worthwhile gain...that's why bolt ons are easier...street bike do it...should work in this case.

apex mountain crracing 174
apex blower 136 for asphalt racing
osp drag race sled (apex engine based)
the head in the apex engine is already filling the cylinders pretty good stock.
Nothing like the typical small block poor design/efficiency

been there and done that research
I've researched this for years now....the guys doing the port work get 8-10 h.p. by splitting the head gasket or shaving the head and porting , a cam adds another 5-8 h.p. ,REAL world H.P. !!
With cam, porting, compression, fuel & timing, header, & pipe and mapping it's 25 h.p. according to Hurricane performance. This has been done by others as well.......which is cheaper, Hurricane or Yama Charger.....not sure???
I guess it depends on how many of the items you have already. If you already own the fuel controller, timing, header and pipe then your probably ahead to get the cam and have the head ported a little. Cheap H.P. on these sleds DOESN'T exist, this is why everyone runs boost! I for one would love to have Hurricane or Ulmer or Racing Station offer a porting, cam, fuel map, timing and header package for 2500.00, I'd buy it if they could guarantee 25 H.p. from the bottom to the top......maybe even turn a bit more RPMS say 11500 to get a little more H.P., I know Hurricane was working on something similar but haven't heard anything this year about the package deal. Hurricane is a quality shop and if they sell it it WILL hit their advertised mark....but at what cost?
Hope this helps....cheers!
