My sled has run a little warm (meaning the warning light comes on once in a while when really cold and running a lake) but I just spent a very cold week in Quebec and spent a lot of time managing the yellow light. I even tried the redneck ice scratchers bolt through the ski. The only thing I did to change anything prior to this trip was shorten the snow flap so it doesn't drag low and get caught in reverse. The bolt scratchers seem to only create a blizzard behind me and not much for the coolers.
My main reservoir is full to the top and the Overflow stayed pretty much right at the line. Should I use an Antifreeze tester? Should I just drain and start over with 50/50 water/coolant? Bleed air? My Apex did not have a rear cooler and I rarely had overheating but maybe I should just a add a rear cooler?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Jack

Test the coolant and make sure it isn't 100% coolant. Yamaha was sending sleds out with straight coolant.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I have heard cutting the snowflap makes a difference as it doesn't allow the snow to swirl around like it need to do.
Also, like Mighty mentioned, test your coolant. I replaced mine with a 60/40 mix and a bit of water wetter as the coolant was the darkest/slimiest glycol I had ever seen.

I always run the short snow flaps because the standard one's always get caught when I back off my trailer. Never had any over heating issues.
I've overheated (yellow light) a few times on my 07 Attak. It only happened on warm days putting around with the kidlets tho. I installed a rear cooler and also changed my coolant mix to -40c. The coolant was soo strong from the factory that it pinned the needle in my glycol tester.
Have not overheated since.
My buddy lost the flap and holder on his '06 Apex one trip. He never had any overheating issues.
Can't really see why a shorter flap would cause a problem. The board coolers should work the same whether there is a flap or not.

A shorter flap will catch less snow to be thrown forward to the front heat exchanger. Considering that these sleds are not really powder sleds the running board coolers aren't doing much on groomed trails. My buddies 2013 came standard with a rear cooler I suppose thats the ticket.
Pardon my ignorance but will a cheap antifreeze tester tell if its 100% coolant? Looks pretty yellow to me.

Is there a way to rule out a water pump issue?

All the Yamahas I've have worked on have dark green coolant. The teaters I have used all measure the temp that the coolant mix is good to. Run mine between -40 to -45c.
To test the water pump, run the sled. Each board should warm up at roughly the same.

I had the same problem, until I added the rear cooler a couple of years ago. Yamaha realized they should have added this cooler from the factory, and sold me one which I installed for around 100 bucks. Haven,t seem the lite in 2 years since I added the cooler. It makes a huge difference. Best 100 bucks I spent, not having to worry about potential overheating problems.

Well i am sure of the running boards getting warm as I managed the heat in part by piling them full of snow.
Really interested in just using the small Apex cooler.
Hopefully that and the right mix will be enough.

This passed week my temperature light came a few times. It was due to ice build up under the tunnel.

My sled came with near 100% glycol as far as I could tell. I diluted it to 60/40, added Water Wetter, & added a rear heat exchanger. This helped greatly but I will still overheat sometimes on hardpack even if it is very cold.
On hardpack ice scratchers are required to throw snow on the running board heat exchangers.
