How do the RX1 carbs really work?

Last night I had the carbs off my 03 RX1 Mountain, making sure that there was no "green stuff" in the jets. They were very clean. My question is, how does the vacuum get to top side of the diaphrams? Is it thru slides them selfs? I always assumed that there was a passage where that tiny o-ring is at the top cover. There is no passage there, Im not sure what that o-ring is trying to seal either. :4STroke:

I'm not sure what that "O" ring is for? Maybe there is a port on the motorcycle but it not needed on the sled? How these slides work is as the volicity of air passes through the venturi, it creates a vacum. The vacum goes up through the slide into the top of the carb where that diaphram is. The greater the vacum the higher it pulls the slide up. The spring controls how high the slide goes. They use this type of carb on motorcycles to smoothen out the throttle response. If you put a regular flat slide carb on a motorcycle with this type of motor, it would be kind of jerky to ride. Every time you hit bumps on the road and you bumped the throttle the bike would jerk. However on a sled this would be a plus. I believe the reason that didn't use regular flat slides on this sled was for clearance reasons under the hood. These carbs are pretty short. Or maybe because they just work so it was easier then re-inventing the wheel?

I think you can leave the O-ring out and just plug the small hole since it really doesn't do anything. Then you don't have to worry about loosing the O-rings anymore.
