Will I look at it this way, for the 100bucks or so for a skid plate OR 1000 bucks or so for a new frontend. A skid plate can take a hard hit, and all u have do is buy a new and bolt it in takes about 30mins to do so and away u go. Or you hit something and you take a week to fix it. Just don't want to see some out because they didn't want to get the plate. Sorry for going on and on and on.

I don't know if the yamaha skid plate covers this area but this is the result of my one and only ride before I installed my Skinz Float plate in December 07.

My first new sled was a 95 ski-doo formula 583 .On the first ride I hit a rock froze in a bank I was going up. It took 8 weeks to get a new tunnel and bulkhead just in time for the last snow of the season. Every sled sense that gets a skid plate. After a season you can see lots of scrapes and digs on the plate. Well worth the $ in my eyes.

So do you guys recommend the Yamaha float skid plate or the ultra plate?

Skid plate= protection. I agree with APEX O6. That being said if your sled is 100% groomed trails you can probably get away without it but for any of us off trail guys it is a must.

I would never ride without skid plate

The only negative is that they trap snow then it turns to ice and adds weight.

stock skid plate doesnt seem to trap any snow. it fits tight enough where there is no room for snow to get in there

I drilled holes at a angle on the ridges on the yamaha skid plate to let the water drain out . The angle wont let snow in but the water from the melted snow wont freeze and pop the plate off . I think I did two or three 3/8 holes on each of the three ribs .Ran two years with out any troubles.

I run only the skid plate. I put the metal pieces from the stock pain into my skidplate and drilled holes in the skidplate for water to drain out. I also used 1/4-20 steel nutserts in the subframe instead of the aluminum ones so I can cinch the screws down tight without stripping anything. Works great and it allows easier/faster access to the engine.

Never hurts to add some more protection to your sled! Better safe than sorry...

nikolai can you post some more pics / details on the nutserts you mentioned ..where did you get are they like rubber wellnuts? stupid question....the aluminum strips on the skidplate came off the sled? (have had that portion of the sled apart yet lol)
which holes are for drainage and did you have to drill out larger for mounting on the plate and the sled then?
thanks
