The newest problem I have with my 2005 Rage is that I have error code 42 and 84 showing at the end of a 40 mile ride. I lost my spedometer reading, 42 indicates trouble with the spedo and 84 is TORS (throttle Override System) Using the search function on here I found several people with the same message after they lost a bearing on the drive shaft. I am not very mechanically inclined and not overly familiar with where everything is on the sled. I ordered a service manual, but it has not come yet. Would the bearing actually come out of the sled, because I saw a ball bearing in the trailer and assume it probably came from the sled.
- Is there an easy way to tell if the bearings are toast?? Anything I else I should be looking into?

look for the splined part on the speedo side of the shaft - if that is gone you will get those codes - if the bearing is bad you might have vibrated the bolt out enough so that the splined part does not move. if the speedo sensor doesnt see that splined part moving it will throw 84 tors and 42 speed sensor.

Loosen track tension, take a grip on the drive shaft and see if there is movement - if yes the bearing is gone - on the left side (not on the chain case side) but if you drive long enough with a "gone" left side bearing you will destroy the right side bearing/chain/sprocet wheels and if you have realy bad luck, the chain case to.

If you found a ball bearing on trailer, that's probably not a good sign. Should be able to look under the secondary clutch and see something. Your speedo gear is right there.

if plastic speedo pick-up is touching splined metal speedo gear on end of shaft its out. you need pick-up and bearing. there should be a noticable air gap between the two.

I had the same problem with the same sled. Replace both drive bearings while your at it and install a new speedo sensor and you will enjoy another trouble free year. Be sure to blue loctite the chaincase side drive axle bolt and torque to spec. Do not over tighten.

After you take off the Secondary, to remove the PTO Side Drive Shaft Bearing:
1. Remove Speedo Gear on end of shaft
2. Remove Speedo Pickup and set it aside
3. Remove Bearing retaining plate
4. From inside the tunnel, remove the two Torx Bit Set Screws in the bearing's collar
5. From the tunnel side, drive a large flat-blade screwdriver between the bearings' collar and the collar holding the drivers in place. This will free up the bearing enough to slide off. Some times you have to use the screw driver and other supports between the two collars to get it totally off.
6. If the bearing is good, use a jeweler's screwdriver to remove the seals,
7. Clean and re-pack bearing. If you are not sure that it is good, replace it.
8. Put antiseize on the ID of the bearing collar, shaft and set screw holes.
9. Reinstall bearing's seals, bearing, retaining cover, speedo sensor and speedo gear.
If the bearing is bad, replace it. If you have any question about the condition of the bearing replace it.
If the Speedo gear has damaged the Speedo Sensor, you are going to have to replace it. These are not cheap. Follow the wires back and you will find a snap-on connector.
Generally speaking a lot of us remove and clean the bearing a couple times a year. However, a lot of folks also just replace it and do not mess with the repacking, etc. However, both of these groups of folks keep a close eye on the bearing. If it goes bad and you get the error codes, typically, that means you just turned a $10.00 job into a $100 job. That speedo sensor is not cheap.

Just an update: due to lack of time and desire to freeze, I took it to the dealership. The bearing was gone, it inturn took out the speedometer. I wish I would have known to get that bearing checked, oh well live and learn. I am having them change the jack shaft bearings also and it will come to near $400.

Just one note here. Once you have the new bearings in, you can maintain them by cleaning and re-packing them at least annually. (I clean and repack mine every couple K miles.) In doing such, you are inspecting them and the payback is the cost of the bearings and the speedo sensor, in the case of the drive shaft bearing, is saved.

I add grease all my bearings every 1000 miles or so with a grease injection needle. Takes a few min, the jack shaft and drive shaft bearings on my rx1 were like new @8800 miles.
If the bearing is full of grease, it cant be full of water.

I don't know the number on the bearing that I bought for $9 but essentially it was a 6205 that had a collar with a set screw. The only difference was the set screw was allen, not torx and 1/4 the price

NAPA for example sells two different quality levels of 6205 bearings.
