A castle nut is a good idea. It would also give you some more space to drill through the bolt. Although it is probably harder to find a metric castle nut as opposed to a regular nut.

I'll keep my eye peeled for a castle nut of the correct size
as it was, the hardware store only had one m14/1.50
and it happened to be a 22mm socket, glad I had one that big.
