OK so I went up to the U.P. three weeks ago with my RX1 and got there Sunday afternoon. We got up there about 2pm and went for a hundred mile jaunt and my sled was running perfectly. I have a 2003 RX1 Mtn. with at the time 4500 miles on it and never had any problems with it. Monday we decide to ride up to Copper Harbor from Greenland so we head out and everything is great until Mohawk when I smell a strong odor of burning oil, rubber or grease so i immediately pull over and check my belt. Belt is fine its only the second belt I have ever used on this sled. So I put it back together and take off but I notice a vibrating feeling similar to when a belt is gonna go.So i stop again and notice the jackshaft bearing is smoked and I can actually see the burnt collar and a couple of ball bearing laying on the block behind the secondary S***.
Well I'm screwed and end up paying a local guy 130$ to tow me back to Hancock then onto Mass City where I was staying. When we stopped to have the dealer look at it he said he would start on it in the morning which was great. I had one more day to ride and wanted to get it done. the dealer took care of it and I was back on the trail by 2pm Tuesday (my last day) to ride.
After riding for about ten miles I start to get on her and notice a decent size vibration coming through the handlebars when i get on her good but it is less when just going even slower. I went though the track, belt, rear suspension and then I called the dealer to see what it might be. He told me to check the regular things and also see if there was any slop in the jackshaft bearing. It was all good and by that time the trip was almost over so I rode home another 40 miles, loaded it up and went home.
The sled has been in my trailer since I got back and I went to take her off the trailer today so I could run through it before I go up north tomorrow. When I tried to drive it off the trailer it would not move kinda like the track was binding. I knew something was wrong so I tilted the sled and yanked it off the jacked the rear up to see if the track was binding. I couldn't turn the track by hand so I took off the belt and tried turning the secondary which was very hard to turn, I was bear hugging the secondary to get it to move just a little bit. I then loosened the tension bolt on the chain and i got it to move but it was still turning very very rough. Finally I checked the chain case oil level and the damn thing was empty. I'm pretty pissed but I don't know what I can do.
There was a small oil stain on my trailer floor under the chain about the size of a half dollar but it was dry. It looked like it was just residual oil under the case and really not much at all so I really don't think it all leaked out.
What do you guys think happened? I really think the mechanic forgot to put chain case oil in this thing after he got her back together. Either way I'm screwed for this weekend.

Thinking he for got the oil, is the drain pulg in it. You will need chain, bearings, hopefully no gears. Get a hold of this guy http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php? ... highlight=
He will be able to get you parts cheaper.

Tear into the chaincase now, most likely smoked the right side jackshaft bearing or something else in the chaincase.
This is exactly why I will never bring my sled to someone I dont know to fix it. I'll fix it myself or just not ride.
Either way if you tear into it now you can most likely have it running by next weekend.
Good luck

What dealer did you bring it to?

Hey thanks for the info guys. Is the parts guy legit? Yes the plug is in and tight with no residue around it.
Really wish I woulda done the work myself. Gotta love the roller coaster love affair we have with snowmobiling!
I don't wanna bad rap the dealer cuz stuff happens and he said to bring it up and if its his fault (i cant see how it wouldn't be) he will absorb it. Thing is I'm 400 miles away.

I have order alot with him, good parts, easy handle of the sell, and very fast shipping.
Did you check your speedo bearing as well. Its not that bad to fix really just tear into it and lay everything out in order as you take them apart. Pay attention to collars and spacers where they belong and the side they were installed. It helps to take a few pictures just in case you forget where somethng goes. You may want to change the speedo bearing also if there is any play and if not at least check it out and regrease it.

Yes I did do the speedo bearing in it when I put the new track in last year. I think the driveshaft bearings had about 1000 mi. on them.

I had a pinched gasket after working on my chaincase and it only leaked when I rode (not when parked) so I ended up losing all the oil on the trail. It never gave me a vibration, only a high pitched whine when going over 30 mph. I probably drove it dry for about 30 miles and it never locked up. It got me home but the gears all had teeth marks in them and the chain was pooched.
