

Any shop SHOULD be able to do it.You will be checking from both ways.Pressure test coolant system and a stethoscope in each plug hole and valve cover.They will be listening for a leak and visually checking for pressure loss which could even take all night long to show up.Other test is with a leakdown tester each cylinder.Look for bubbles in coolant Personally I think it is a very small leak if its only a bit of oil.To test oil cooler I believe it would have to be removed and sealed then pressure tested.

I'm like more and more every day that it could be the oil cooler. It looks like form the diagram there are 2 coolant hoses going into it and 1 small seal. I'm hoping that seal is blown and I can replace the seal. Its about $12. Or play it safe and replace the entire oil cooler. I think thats the next step. I've eliminated a blown head gasket with the block tester. The water pump could be the problem too but you have to remove motor to get to it. I'm crossing my fingers its the oil cooler.

Just removed oil cooler. Is it supposed to be JB Welded on the side? I think not! Think we've found the problem. I have pics if anyone wants to see the jb weld and what I found. Send me a text 765-seven one nine -1757

Sure sounds like you found it! It will prove to be far less costly to install a new cooler than some of the alternatives.
Biggest headache now will be flushing the oil out of the rest of the cooling system.

Hmmm. Why didn't the dealer find the JB Weld on the cooler? I'd be looking for my service money back. GD you ran that thing a whole season like that didn't you?

I was going to ask this. $317.64 is the cheapest I found as well. Any other good yamaha OEM new parts places to buy from? I'll be placing my order in the morning. I don't work on snowmobiles for a living either, but thanks to your guys help I was able to figure this out. The difference between a service guy and me is that I have a personal interest in the property and go the extra mile to diagnose, fix and repair. Most service guys won't take that kind of time to eliminate all those variables plus I'd be paying tons of money for time and labor.

This happens on truck engines all the time. Put water and dish washing soap in the cooling system and run it till it gets to operating temp and drain it you might have to do it 2 or 3 times before it cleans up.Soldier'spapa said:Sure sounds like you found it! Yep, when your shop labour rate is $xx an hour, the search and destroy missions can add up quickly and then try and explain that to the customer AND keep them happy.

If the head gasket was gone, wouldn't it be obvious? Did you have any smoke blowing out the exhaust? Running hot, did it go into limp mode...anything like that?

Have had to flush a few like this.
Mix up Dawn dish soap with water as the guys suggested, then feed it into the water intake of the warmed running engine, and let the water/soap/oil run out.
Believe you disconnect the coolant reservoir, one line will be inlet & one exhaust(return).
Put a funnel on the inlet line and pour the soap/water mix in as the engine takes it.
Usually 5 gallons will do it.
Fully flush with clean water.
(Easy, just let the hose run in the inlet of the running engine.)
Can do this as long as you want, as long as the hose is on, your engine wont overheat.
Drain & refill coolant.
We winterize boats like this all the time also.
(Using anti-freeze.)
Also change the oil a couple times (after running each time), small amounts of coolant can do major damage to your lower end bearings.
