Yummy, I think you are right.
The last trip that I did was mostly lakes.
Used a little...not much at all. (1/8 of a litre)
This was the first time that I had to add oil all season.

I agree with that. However, I believe once it starts burning oil it will use it at all running levels. Just more at higher rpms.

Scooby said:Our group has typically 5000 to 8200 miles on our 05's and no oil at all. Dan's 04 warrior has about 19,000 and doesn't use oil. We all use Yamaha new 0-30 oil and change at about 2000 miles.
I know of 2 guys that use oil at 1 qt per 400 miles but they are clutched to run 10,500. Both remover the EVAC and clutching and stopped using oil.
My turbo uses oil when I am running on and playing on lakes.

Scooby you old farts have some high mileage RX-1's and Warriors riding with you! What kind of failures have you had and what parts are wearing out? It sure is not the Engines

Just keep full and ride guys! These motors at 10,000+ Rpm all day will drink a little oil. No big deal.

Bolth of my warriors never use any oi;. I have a 03 rx-1 that uses some oil if you run it above 10k for 5 miles or so. Ran about 40 miles to the bar on one tank and it used a quart in 1000 miles. If you run it at lower speeds it uses no oil.
Yep, trying taking any motor put it in frist gear and hold close to REDLINE for a few hours see how much oil it sucks!!

Yummy said:Just came back from 4 days riding over 1100mi. The warrior took .8 quart.
So can anyone tell me if this is normal? I've done over 6000mi. with it so far and this is the first time I'm adding oil between oil changes... I'm starting to think that oil comsuption could directly be link to How hard you are driving it.
I'll use careful wording here. Is it typical of an RX-1? Yes, using up to 1 qt. in 1000 miles is typical, and is considered "normal". As an engine builder 9Master Engine Machinist), is it "normal" to use almost a quart in 1100 miles of what I'm assuming to be trail riding? No, thats an oil consumption problem and should be addressed. It again goes back to what I keep saying: just because "they all do it", doesn't make it right. I don't care how hard you are running it, this motor in stock form shouldn't use a noticable amount of oil between 3000 mile oil changes (1/4 to 1/2 qt. max). If running at high speed is an indication, Formula-1 cars running in a 24 hour race would go through a case of oil...but they don't. And they are running extremely high strung motors.
Still, what you are using isn't enough to get worked up over on this model sled. Just keep an eye on it, and catch it the earlier the better. When my low oil light came on 3 weeks after buying my sled new at a little over 500 miles, the dealer said it was "normal". Last year when it was still under warranty and I complained about using a quart every 250-300 miles, I was again told it was normal. Now I'm using a quart in 100 miles of moderate trail riding, and Yamaha won't do anything about it. I should have stood my ground last year and taken legal action.

I noticed when first starting the engine on my 04 Warrior after a day of riding anywhere from 200 to 300 miles on the previous day and letting it warm up 10 minutes or so that the oil level was low So I added several ounces of oil to bring the level up. I did this for two days in a row. And after this I tried something different At the end of a day of riding sometimes more than 300 miles I would than check the oil and it was full I did this for the next few days at the end of the ride and it remained full What's up with that??
This is a FACT, I just did the same thing this week. Ten minutes is apparently not enough to get the oil to full temperature. Check your oil at the END of your ride and I think that many of you guys who think you are burning oil will find that you are not at all. What would happen if you let it run 10 minutes and checked it, then added some to bring it up? Answer... You blow it out the top of the reservoir.
There was a HUGE difference in oil level from cool to hot. The full range of the dipstick in fact. Check it only when TRULY hot.

I would bet that you overfilled it since it was not really hot yet, then you blew some out the top of the tank when it got hot, and when you checked it again at the same relative temperature, the level was down. From now on, only check it HOT, and when you change the oil, only fill it to E, then go ride and check it when you are done, it will be at F.

When I had to put oil in it was after 50+ miles and I guarantee she was hot since I ran a couple of long lakes real fast. I was in Blind River Ontario and had to have the guy from the gas station take me to an auto parts store to get good oil since he only had 2 stroke smoke on the shelf. Like I said I had to put in damn near an entire quart. But I know for sure she was hot.QCRider said:yamabluerx1 said:ummm yes I did and she was full. You deffently have a rare and serious oil problem. Have you ever tested your compression. I say it's time to tear down your engine and inspect the rings. Broken cracked scraper possible. Maybe they forgot to install one all togher. I know it will be a pain to take apart but it's what you are going to have to do. I have rode my warrior to the bar alot. Rode Rail beds and Long lakes for 1000 miles and dident use any oil this past week.

Its at the dealer right now having the compression and a leakdown test done. The service manager basically told me in advance that theres nothing Yamaha is planning to do other than just check those and send the sled home. If they don't fix it, its not worth tearing down with all the metal in the crankcase from the ground up stator wiring bracket. Way too much $$$ and time for me to invest. The sled will go down the road before I do all that. Right now all of our money is going into our home and shop. Once the shop is sold this summer, I'll be buying a pair of sleds for myself and my wife, which sure won't be brand new Yamahas. I was planning to either keep mine and build it up, give it to my stepson and buy a pair of new Yamahas for us, or buy 3 new Yamahas and keep this one for a spare for friends to ride, or just build the hell out of it for a toy. Not no option will include brand new Yamahas, because their warranty sucks and they don't stand behind their motors.
