Just put on two new straps, 3 boggie wheels and a set of sliders at 987 miles. I also own a 2010 summit X 146 that has 1200 miles and 800 of them on trail. My Summit is mint with 0 slider wear and has a 2 1/4 track and I never drive in low snow conditions ever....what is up with these yammies? Love the sled but c'mon?

This is my first Yamaha and I purchased it since I plan a turbo for it in the very near future? Maybe not now since this thing spits out skid parts like crazy. Somebody please help! My dealer said the the top shock bolt is also eating my inner lugs on the track since the plastic caps fell off and the end of the bolt is polished like a mirror. He suggested a set of bearings at each end of the bolts both on the top and bottom.....feedback please? Should I hold out for a fix or sell it since 500 bucks every 1000 miles in skid parts is kinda silly!

I hear ya, I've had some good luck with the doubled up strap fix.
But I also took some time and real effort over Sept. Oct. to add strength and other aftermarket components to the skid.
I took the skid appart completely, did a bunch of stuff.
But for the strap issue, I welded on extra traps on the top shaft. This also helps to keep the straps from bending too much.
In stock form the straps fold easily and up into the track lugs, which get pulled, tugged over, then cut and break.
So both these 2 things alone are very cool to keep track and wheel damage to a min. from strap breakage.

All that said and the approx. $700 I've got tied up into skid upgrades.
I'm still breaking stuff on this skid. But seems to be normal wear componets now.

I'll tear it appart again before next season and decide if I'm going to invest more into it, or bite the bullet...
I have my eye on the AD Boivin ZX2.
But that will change the sled completely.

Do you think you will prefer the X2 riding caracteristics over the stock skid? I hear hes stuff is high qualitly. It wou be nice to try one first though to make sure it's what you want?

Some of the Apex guys have them and say great things about them.
Sure, the tip up rail is the key to the XTX. (or is it?)
Meanwhile I keep adding weight to the skid beefing it up.
And I'm not a huge guy I average 205 - 210 lbs depending on how much I eat at the bar.
These plastic skids appear to remove some un-sprung weight.
And I wonder how much ice / snow build up is in a ZX2.
The XTX skid seems to hold a ton. (not talking about the tunnel build up)
I'm on the fence.

Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast with these Yammies.

Think of all the money Yamaha is making in parts.

Ya but think about how many customers they lose over these crap skids and do they want to sell parts or continue to sell sleds? This is a clear engineering issue that needs to be fixed!

well u could get a doo and replace the eng. evey two rides . They don't seem to lose to many cust. with all the problems they have . I work for a doo dealer and they don't cover every thing i would be happy replacing straps than eng.'s

Yes I could.
But it would most likley be a 1200 4stroke.
Then I'd be looking for a whole new set of fixes.

This is not just about a set of cheap straps.
Last year with only 150km on my 09 XTX, I found the straps and bolts destroying the inner track drive lugs.
Took it to 2 different dealers for a look. (ahh tracks are not coverd)
I was lucky to find this issue early and do something about it. (thanks TY)
What we are talking about is a $500 track and other skid components that get trashed due to a very minor player.

Anyone stick there head under the 2011 APEX XTX EPS for a look.
Anything different on the strap set up there?

A buddy of mine has a 2010 xtx that i am borrowing for a 3 day trip and thanks to you guys i looked at the straps and they were half worn at the track cogs. I made a set from conveyor belt to get the ride in and yes the dealer says there is a fix kit for them but will take a couple of days to get here, what it is i don't know.

I have 4000 mi on the original straps and can't figure out why some of these units go thru staps? Maybe the hygear revalve with the slower rebound has some efffect on it.

My dealer mentioned a fix also... That was in Dec.
So I have no idea what Yamaha is waiting for...??

2k miles on my 09 xtx & original straps looking good.

I know it strange, some have issues and other do not.
Everyone will have a different experience depending on various condtions and riding styles, setups etc.
But...
The photos showing strap damage in the FAQ under post "Limiter Strap Fix" is undeniable.

Last year I said I would not say anything until Yamaha did something for me. But waiting 2 years was too much, so I fixed this issue myself.
After my fixes, I have no more strap problems.
But, others will continue to have issues and not even know it until it is too late. How many people ride and never touch a computer, and trust thier dealer help for all issues.

My strap fix:
1. Doubled up the strap to make it thicker. (less roation and bending up)
2. Added extra trap (welded) at the top shaft. (helps keep the strap lower away from track)
3. Added Doo wheels and marginal sno wheels up front to keep the sliders thicker on the curve. (keeps the track further away from the front lower shaft and also helps stop the lower shock body (eye mount) from getting trashed)
4. Revalved the front shock and added dual rate springs. (better more controled shock action)
