Is there a way start these 4 strokes if the starter pukes?

Say your starter dies on the trail like mine did. Is there a way to pull start the engine by using your belt on the front clutch pulley....or something along those lines?

You might be able to start it with a strap or starter rope wrapped around the primary when the sled is warm, but I wouldn't bet on starting it when it's cold. Why not test it out before your next ride?

Yes. A strap or rope pulled by hand will work when warm.

I tried it on my Warrior years ago just for fun. A bit of a tug but it worked.
It would be a challenge if cold.

Cats in the old days came with a clutch starter strap with a wooden T handle that fit in your hand. I kept mine when I sold the last Cat in the 90's and carry it with me just in case as I thought it was a good piece to have in the trail tool kit.

I have heard of guys wrapping the primary and attaching it to another sled to pull the rope or strap when the sled was cold. Sounds a bit dangerous to me but I am told it will work.

I did it on my '06 Nytro when I had it just for $hits & grins.

It was on a warm engine, & it fired right up. Used about a 3-4' piece of ratchet strap nylon ( no hooks obviously )

The interesting part will be putting the side panel back on with the clutch spinning!

Or when the rope gets caught as it fires up....you think the clutch rattles now!

Excellent replies! I like the idea of using the ratchet strap fabric. The sled was warm and should have popped right over with minimal revolutions.

After my sled was towed out, my buddy said I could have taken of my leather belt and used that to pull it over. Life would have been way better if I could have pull started it!

Thanks for the replies!

Yea, a one lunger. Try that with 2-3 more cylinders when cold.

I know some quads also have an automatic compression release too. Don't know if the Kodiak is one, but I know our sled engines don't have them.

Starter on my phazer quit a cpl weeks ago,i had no rope but i did have a small extension cord that i use to plug in the phazer, when warm,it started real easy, next morning,at the motel,in a heated garage,it took me 15 min to get it started, the motor has to crank a few times before it starts

For those of you that must know I have started my 2004 warrior with the rope that ski doo used to supply and It is not that hard to do. left the key on one day and thats what had to be done.
