I now just wanna let him keep his POS 2 smoke Doo. It's just two years older and the engine is blown. I think I'll just save my money.
Somethings kids have to learn on their own.

Yeah, he's 14. Can you believe that! I didn't have a 1/8 of the stuff he has at that age. Even his 12 year old brother told him to "suck it up Princess, it's a great working sled" and then asked me if he could have it instead. I'm inclined to do just that but he flipped his old Safari because he was going too fast on a road run and then later almost got smucked by a car because he didn't look before crossing.
I just want to the whole family to be able to ride together.

Could always buy 'em and see what happens between now & then.
The boy might look at it more in a different light over the Summer and be amped to ride when the snow flies.
If not, selling is an option....
Good luck on your decision

Holy moly some riding rules must be made and adhered to before someone gets hurt. Stop and looking both ways is a must on road and railway crossings.

That is a possible option and I might even make some money out of it if he doesn't "harden up"
He's actually reading right now as I type this and has seen the comments. He's sorta warming up to it but is still not quite convincing. Now he's saying he wants a new suit and helmet to match!

I bought my first sled when I was 17, was a cat. after 3 trips to the dealership and still would not start I sold it (all in the same season). My father told me he would help me out if I wanted to get a sled because now he had no one to go with. The conditions where that I had to dump my bank acct to him every month and it had to be a 4 stroke lol. So with some shopping around he said he would help me out with a phazer.
Going from a 800cc 2 stroke I was worried about the 500 4 stroke, and the phazer looked ugly to me at the time but that is what my dad wanted to help me with. After the first week end I was sold on it, the looks of the phazer grew on me and still are.
I say buy it, if he really dosent like it let him keep the 2 stroke and sell the phazer, you will end up having payed verry little for the other phazer...

I wasn't to fond of them when a few guys around me bought new in '07- thought they were the ugliest thing going, wasn't impressed (I've always been a 'Cat rider).
4 years later I'm riding one (at 42), put 1600 on and had a ball this 1st season.
Of course I had to buy new gear too.... Arctiva makes nice stuff

We got some more pictures of it last night and he's warmed up to it so now he's begging me to get it. Now I'm just getting around to setting things up with the RIV, the US border and stuff. There might be a hiccup with the recalls because he said that he never brought it in to the dealer for anything. He should be able to confirm this with the punch mark next to the VIN.

your dealer recall letter will tell you everything you need. If you have the VIN, call any dealer and they will tell you in seconds if anything has been done, I just went thru this a week ago... well worth the work!

Sherlock, how did you deal with the 72 hour thing with the US Border Protection? Just got off the phone with them and they require the original title mailed (not faxed) to the border crossing 72 hours prior to taking it out of the US. How am I supposed to do that if I am going to see it, buy it and bring it back the same day? Do I have to buy it sight unseen, send the money to a total stranger and get the seller to send the title at that time?

Mooseman, Not being able to fax paperwork to border is BS... everyhting was fax'ed to border here in NB. I bought my sled out of maine. Yamaha dealer, i did this all on a tues morning, had bill of sale, recall letter, and title "FAXED" to us customs. Friday morning i went down looked sled over, bought it. I drive to US customs, with another copy of paperwork, they looked things over, stamped it for Export. Drove 200 feet to canada customs, gave them all paperwork, they looked everythign up to make sure legit. At canada customs, they will give you a "from 1"(pink/white/yellow form..) they again go thru everything.. they look for bill of sale, title, recall letter. You will have to pay federal tax(5%) they give you a blue sheet showing canadian value and taxes you paid. once accross your almost done.
next go onto RIV.ca pay your $220 import fee, fax/email all paperwork, after 24hrs they send you a RIV imspection form bring this plus form 1 to crappy tire. they look at it, stamp it, then its time to register and pay the provincial tax....
All 3 of my sleds came from US... and i FAXED everything. I'd be calling and asking why you can't fax paperwork then bring original when you cross. US customs, asked to have it faxed where i crossed.

I actually called 3 different NY border crossings and talked to them. All of them want the actual documents (title and bill of sale) sent to them 72 hours before and they said specifically NO FAXES. I even asked how am I supposed to do that when I go down to actually buy the sled and they basically said "not our problem".
What I'm wondering is does Canada Customs actually look for a stamp or something on the title saying that it's been through US Customs? I have read of some that just didn't stop at the US side border and just went to the Canada side where they don't really care about what the US side does. They just want to get your money. I have also read about one that didn't do it and was turned around by Canada Customs to get the 72 hour thing done at the US and had to get the sled stored.

Make sure you go to US side.... i "accidentally" went right thru.... canada customs turned me right around and sent me back.... was nicely warned it is a $50000 fine for not exporting from US first... but... depending on what/who guards are on that day depends on if they look or not.... worst case.... sled and paperwork have to sit at border for 72hrs.
It maybe because its out of NY state... every state has there own but close rules.... in Maine fax is just fine, as long as you present the "actual" at time of export. Find out if customs has a holding facility.. and the 72 hr thing sometimes can be pushed. when i brought the pazer accross 2 weeks ago, the first and only time any US customs guard looked at the paperwork was when i showed up....

NY doesn't have a title for sleds, we just use the 2 part registration with the new owner's signature on the back (for the transfer of ownership).
Sounds like BS but it is NY- sorry I live in this crap holed state!
