Well, the fun continues. After replacing my jack shaft bearing on the driven clutch side, I soon after had a noise coming from the chain case. Found out today the upper outer bearing on the chain case side failed. It spit most of the ball bearings into the case. Metal shavings galore in the oil! My question is, even though everything looks ok, would any of you change the chain or gears? I am afraid of unseen wear from the bearings dropping down and getting caught(I did hear some grinding noise) on these parts that may fail later. My dealer indictes he has never seen this before, so just my luck!

I have the same problem on my 03. I did the update on the bearing and replaced the rest and have trashed two bearings on the outside chain case and the inner chain case. I checked it tonight because I am going to Mi. over christmas and the bearing had less than a hundred miles on it and failed and then welded itself to the jack shaft. So in the process the outer chain case was broke in two :o| :o| :o| :o| so it looks like I will be riding the old vmax . I am going to check the shaft tomorrow at work and see if its bent but I hope someone will have an answer to all this mess.

I had this same problem, but luckily I happened to notice all the problems while I had the chaincase apart during my Cat skid upgrade. The bearings were trashed, and extremely loose. I bet one or two more rides and I would have done serious damage. That was at aprox. the 3000 mile mark on my second season. I wouldn't say you guys had any particular problems, just typical wear for these machines. I have a feeling more people have worn chaincase bearings than they think, but the opposite side jackshaft bearing gets noticed more easily because its out in the open.

As for a real repair...I can't begin to guess. Replace them, put new oil in the case, and ride on...and keep an eye on the new bearings. I can't give a really educated opinion about reusing the chain and gears, but my personal opinion is to check the gears for signs of damage, such as chipped or gouged teeth. Check the chain for looseness the way you would check any chain...try to bend it sideways and see how far it moves. If it bends a lot, it has a lot of wear. If it doesn't bend much, its probably fine. Also visually check the inside of the chain for signs of bent links, chips or other visible signs of damage. If everything looks and feels fine, you are probably O.K. running the chain and gears. These chains are pretty durable, and can take quite a bit of abuse. Clean the chaincase out really well and run it.

Thanks for the input. nhrxrider; Did you replace the lower drive shaft bearing on the chain case side as well? If not, how did it look at 3000 miles? I will replace both upper bearings in the case. Seems to me Yamaha has cheapened up it's bearings. I has been a yamaha rider for 30+ years (first was a Sl 396!) and have never had this type of wholesale bearing problem.

I called the dealer to get my parts today and that $12 bearing ended up costing me $463 to fix it after the bearing siezed. I hope this was all caused by a bent jack shaft if not then I have no clue. When I did the update the clutch side bearing collar was gone and I never checked the shaft to see if it was bent.
Anyone else ever have this problem?

I thinkI have the same problem.Riding the other night, heard a clunking sound, smelled burning rubber, couldnt see anything.Back at the shop i can see the cluth(secondary)is loose, bearing is gone, coller is gone, and the shaft is bent... :o| Could someone tell me what parts to change. My dealer says the collar is not replaceable.I figure since i am going through the work i might as well replace the bearings it the chaincase as well..I have read and re-read in here about jack shafts, but cant find what aftermarket parts to buy..
Thanks for the help and any info as well...

SORRY
I forgot to mention that my sled is an 03 RX1 mountain, hope this helps.

The parts you need aren't aftermarket. Just get all the replacement parts for an '04 machine and you will have the updated parts.

Yep, go to your dealer and ask for the update like the 04's and 05's have, Threaded Collar, Bearing Nut (locking type special nut). A couple of new washer for the different spacing on the secondary side, and new Bearing. Just did mine, cost was around 110cnd for the parts before taxes. There's a post somewhere in here that list the parts and has pics.

Replace EVERYTHING, including the clutch-side drive axle bearing.
