Do you have enough oil in the chaincase. Some of the 1200 Doos had issues of popping out of one gear or another, I Forget which, if there wasn't enough oil in the chaincase.
Either way that is not good. Hope it gets figured out!

This was a problem with the first year 2012 procross,it was the servo motor and a combo of shifting fork, all which has been fixed, last year on mine it never did this at all,and mine now has 2600 plus miles,so I would say it is isolated issue, but bring it back soon, and have them look at it.

This has nothing to do with reverse working ,this has to do with it popping out of gear under full load
I think what has been said is, if you go from reverse to forward make sure to delay and make sure IT IS ALL THE WAY IN FORWARD before taking off. I have seen one of my Phazers do this also when "speed shifting" from reverse to forward.
And Cannondale is correct if you think Yamaha is perfect you never owned a Phazer or a Nytro......

My understanding is the Viper chaincase is a whole different animal. It isn't the standard Cat chaincase and it isn't built like the one Yamaha uses in the Deltabox chassis or the Nytro. I'd at least call the dealer and let them know what happened. They might want you to bring it in. Also check the dipstick for metal shavings.

You guys have a dipstick in your case, than it must be different,we have a sight glass, last I knew you did too,but I may be wrong. So what is suppose to be so different about the viper case compared to cats, they have the same type of gears, both front or forward gear set to drive forward, and a reverse set to back up,and a servo motor to electronically put it into reverse, run the same jack shaft with different spline to accept Yamaha secondary, run the same driveshaft to run exvolute drivers,ok they do run different size gears and chain, and run a roller chainadjuster, man. adjust,so that is about all the difference they have, right!!AKrider said:My understanding is the Viper chaincase is a whole different animal. No dipstick just a sight glass.

Re: Jumped out of gear
Maybe the wire is pinched between the motor and chain case and shorted out the motor and tried to go in reverse , worth a look !wacker said:Was riding across a field today and it popped out of gear, thought at first i broke a belt as it over revved
Shut it down ,checked it over and couldn't find anything visibly wrong so i fired it up and it wouldn't drive so i pushed the reverse button and it clunked into reverse, hit it again and into forward and away i went straight for home. This is not confidence inspiring guys but what to do now as everything appears to be ok without tearing it all apart![]()

So i guess it was no fault of the sled but my own
When i swapped the track out i was supposed to preload the spring on the reverse mechanism, only found this out from a performance shop as my dealer dose not even have a service manual yet so here is the procedure
Remove servo motor and turn plug counter clockwise while rocking the secondary back and forth. This will make sure the gears fully mesh. Now set the servo in so it is sitting to the right of centre and preload it to the left and fasten it back in place

Wacker it's good to know it's a self inflicted issue not something from the factory. Thanks for the update

I've not looked at a Viper chaincase in person and assumed they used a dipstick like every other sled I've owned since '96. My buddy is helping set up some Vipers for the Iron Dog and mentioned the differences in the chaincase from Cat. The Iron Dog team was pulling reverse to increase reliability and were running into issues.
Anyhow, the OP switching out the track added an important piece of info missing from the original post. Improper assembly was the cause.

Could you elaborate on this because the cat manual says....
After install of the servo actuator to turn key to on position and place sled in reverse to forward three times.
Start the sled on a stand and run it in reverse for 20 seconds.

You are correct i just got instruction to cycle the key on and off three times after install but no mention of shifting it three times, guess it can't hurt though.
Apparently i was close with my original install just never preloaded the spring that keeps it from popping out under load.My Bad
