Larger Gas Tank for Phazer

The 07 phazers had fuel tanks with 8.1 gallon capacity. In 08 all yamaha fuel tanks became double lined and lost capacity. The 08-15 phazers only have a capacity of 7.0 gallons.

I just did a trial fit up, and the 07 fuel tanks are a direct fit onto any 08-15 phazer. The gas tank side covers must be removed to do the conversion, however the bottom portion can be trimmed off and used to cover up the subrame. The 07's did not have the covers and the subrame was exposed. I will post some pics to show what I'm talking about

Just figured I'd post this up as its an easy way to pick up a little more fuel range. This mod will work on all 08-15 GT, RTX, XTX, and MTX models. I have several 07 tanks here in stock for $50 each.

Here is photo of an 07 tank installed on an 08. As you can see the subframe and rubber tunnel seal are exposed. All of the 07 models came this way.

If you want to cover up the subframe the gas tank side covers can be trimmed along the textured/smooth line on the panel. The lower textured section can then be bolted back on to cover up the subframe.

My question would be... why did they go with double lined? Was it a safety thing?

I suspect it may have been due to new EPA requirements. It wasn't just the phazer that got the double liner. All of the models got it. There was never any recall on any 4 stroke tank from 03-07, so it was likely just to keep up with new regulations that had to be met on 08 production.

I remember reading the Yamaha Blog from Chris Reid at the time that this happened and it was due to the EPA legislation. All plastic lets some vapors breath through it and the new EPA regulation was for all motorized vehicles to adhere to the new standards of evaporation rate. All the Yamaha sleds lost fuel capacity at this time. I have an 07 Phazer and would like a larger fuel tank because on a longer trip it always requires fuel long before the Vector or Apex. I think it could use a 9 us gallon tank to make the range the same as my Vector.

ya double lined for EPA but I also thought that they had a bigger hump over the exhaust on the 08+ tank also for more clearance over the exhaust. I know my 09' has taken over 7 gallons of gas on 2 occasions but I always pull the white tube out of the filler neck to top it off UNLESS its on the trailer at the time, mine takes a good .3-.4 gallons more gas with white tube pulled out and that tube is quite long on the 08+ tanks. I carry a 1.25 gallon flat pack on the tunnel but rarely use it.

when you fill the neck like that you lose alot out the vent hose I used to do that and stopped and have not noticed much difference in the distance i can go and decided it was not worth the waste.just my 2 cents.
