Leaking Oil Resevoir

Add two more to the list. Both of my friends 06 Rage and Nytro had cracks in the exact same spot with in 100 miles of each other.

After reading about this issue, I looked at mine and did not find anything wrong. I did how ever, drill out the mounting holes and installed gromits with metal inserts and reinstalled the tank. Now the tanks is 'floating ' on rubber.

After reading about this last year I mounted my tank with grommets too at 3000 miles. I now have 5000 miles with no issues.

Has anyone cracked a tank mounted in grommets?

Brad

Well, add another one to the list. Mine went today at about 3900 mi. It's on an 06 Rage. I am thinking about having a friend who is an excellent welder, fix the crack and then maybe beef up that corner with a little extra metal. I think the rubber grommet idea should really help too.

Well I have an update on my tank repair. Took it to my sons buddy and he welded it for me. I liked pistons idea of the grommets, so I did that and then decided to weld a gusset on the corner of the tank. I have pics and will try to post them, but if it doesn't work maybe I can e-mail them to someone for posting. I tried, but says my photo is to big, and I don't know how to resize.

Here are the pics from OutRAGEous.....

rancidjo; Geez, that was fast. Thanks again. I think along with the grommets and putting the gusset on this corner, I won't have any more problems.

looks good, I have only put rubber betwen the mounts for now, I am planning on doing the grommet mount later this season, and may add a gusset like yours in the off season if my tank doesn't crack by then (fingers crossed)

please keep us updated if you encounter any problems with this tank

oil tank

i have had mine crack at about 4000 miles, went through 5 quarts of oil getting back, lucky i found places on the trail as i went could have ruined the motor very easily. Yamaha covered it under Yes. Problem is the design hasn't changed, almost gauranteed to break again after warranty runs out, and no place to carry spare oil.

One more thought. I am going to make a stronger brace that bolts to the bottom hole. I think the tank is flexing back and forth because the brace is not strong enough and it cracks in the corner by the hole.

Leaking oil tank!

Has anyone else had success welding or brazing the oil tank? If so, what kind of welder and rod (tig, oxy/acet). I don't imagine a dealer is going to replace it on warranty with 8000 miles on a 3 year old sled.

sleddermb; The oil tank is made of aluminum and therfore can't be brazed. It will have to be tig welded. See above pics as to how I fixed mine.

From the pictures, are guys just installing the rubber grommets between the bolt and tank flange and not between the flange and frame?

I hadn't heard of tank issues with the Vector but I had with the FX Nytro. With my Nytro, my dealer told me early on to make sure I checked the mounting bolts for tightness. I'm wondering if the bolts are getting loose and allowing the tanks to vibrate and move around?

The grommets I used are electrical wire grommets. They are used when wires pass thru sheet metal, and to prevent the wires from wearing thru the insulation, these grommets are used. I used the 1/2 in. size. Just drill a 1/2" hole in the tank, work the grommet into this hole and then cut a spacer sleeve to put inside the grommet so when you tighten the bolt it does not just simply crush it. The bolt will tighten on the sleeve, and let the tank have some movement which will help isolate the vibration.
