LED bulbs?

HID’s are still way better! Roctoyz is the place to get them from. I’ve ran both and the LED’s just can’t “throw” the light anywhere close to LED’s.

I have a set of LED's, cheap 20W ones with no FAN. More light than the Halogen with a good pattern BUT they don't throw enough heat to keep the lens clear and ice builds up if your riding in a group with snowdust.

Look into PIAA brand LEDs. With LEDs you will want to stay with well known brands and your going to spend more money than you would with off brands. HIDs are a very good option. I run both in different sleds. I and everyone that has taken a ride at night with the PIAA LEDs installed prefers them over the HIDs. HIDs give a very nice light and the coverage is not bad. The LEDs from PIAA broadcast light to the sides as well as front giving spacial awareness on the trail at night. HID or LED over halogen with out a doubt.

The rotation of the lamp is a feature critical to the alignment of the reflector to the lamp, note the PDF.

LEDs tend to be too focused and don't give enough side coverage. I've seen a lot of scattering of the light outside the main beam which creates shadows. To maximize LED lighting the reflector housing needs to be designed for the LED bulb. The high/low beam differential can also be an issue with both LED and HID although with the HIDs it can be corrected.

I've had good luck with DDM Tunning HIDs and they also sell a good plug and play LED setup for under $100 if that's the direction you want to go.

LEDs are also typically 6000K color temperature. Rockmeister has found that in his HIDs, the 4300K color temperature works the best for cutting through snow dust. I have his HIDs (from yamaheater.com) in all my sleds and love them.

I have personally ran both on vipers. Roc’s HIDs on my viper and roc’s LEDs on my wife’s. One ride at night on my sled and my wife wanted the HIDs on hers. Not even close in the distance light is thrown out in front of you. HIDs way better. Now LEDs have come a long way but still can’t compete with the HID. Which ever way you go just be carful of what you buy. A lot of junk out there. This is truly a you get what you pay for. Plus roc’s support and customer service is top notch.
