Let's start this "discussion" again....

When you come on to a sled which has an led of course you are going to see his headlights first then the led. The benifit is knowing you are going to know how many are coming up right away. You will of course see their lights first also but you will know the number coming. More info

Here is the way I see it so far.

I could show up on a ride with a stack of these electrostatic decals in my coat pocket, say 4x4 inches for less than $10 and stick em on everybodys windshield.

or

Looks like the LED might cost $50 each or more plus they would have to be mounted and wired. A few of us might do it. But would everybody on a TY ride have this??

I really cant see the LED costing that much but no wiring I would think rechargable bateries would work as LED dont use much power. If I could I would wire mine in. I think they would catch on myself.

A company in china makes 7 segment LED's up to 5".
I dont know if they will be bright enough for a sunny day.
To get the voltage down to the typical 5V is easy.
But then one would need a 10 position rotary switch or something.

A digit out of a sports score sign perhaps?
Sled Dog do some searches (google?) if you have time.

LOL I am already doing that and have sent 5 emails to different LED manufacturers to see if they are interested in building some and let us help in the design.

A block of leds should be able to do all numbers and letters alike and it should not be hard to build a little chip board and buttons to let us change the number at the push of a button. Maybe some electronics brain here could build it. Stu is an electrician by trade he could build one I bet.

Something like this with buttons to change the number would be nice and look good too. Different color of course.

Be sure to build them in all 4 colors. No respecting Yamaha rider will have a red LED on his sled. Will mittens still be illegal to wear if these LED's are required ?
Better also talk to the mfg's. before they build the 2006 sleds. Maybe they will all incorporate a number switcher into the hand controls. Yamaha will put theirs on the right side with the thumb warmer.

Well-Well-Well / the last time we visited this issue I was in the minority about not taking a hand off the bars/ seems like the tide is turning and someone is getting the message that, at a minumum, it's a dangerous practice / I like the sticker idea / If you could put them on the INSIDE of the windshield they would probably stay there all day and be protected from the elements / remember two sleds traveling toward each other at 40 mph are closing the gap at 80 mph/ even the slightest mistake by either driver / and well / there you are / nice discussion / if anyone comes up with a sticker let us all know / also in reality only the first and last sled would need the markers as most people can count / later

It's not about having control of your own sled. It's about some idiot in the other group not paying attention. Not all roads have median lines, and how many of you hand signal other cars going down a two lane highway??? The same rules of the road apply.

I find hand signals very useful. I have never felt that giving a brief signal is dangerous or has made me even come close to losing control. Granted there have been times when I'm in a tight turn I typically won't signal. Also when you are close to a town signaling doesn't make sense due to slower speeds and heavy traffic when groups are conjested with other groups, one group ends and another starts.

We as a group typically ride in Northern Canada and hand signals are the norm, traffic is low, groups tend not to be bunched together and it helps to keep you more aware of additional riders that are oncoming.

I didn't respond to this earlier, but the incident RX-1Yooper was referring to was the 2 of us leaving Big Spring (here in the central U.P.). I was leading and came to a left hander (for me) just as a group of firecats came the other way. The leader held up 3 fingers.........but the 2nd guy came around the corner (right hander for him) on only the track and the left ski..... :(

I had to stop and turn around to look cause I was certain he'd taken out Yooper..........(not that it would be such a terribly bad thing....... LaLaLa ) but somehow they missed.

What is it about young-ish guys that they feel they have to ride right on the edge..........or just over it........to enjoy themselves?
:? 8)

How about this. People just need to slow down as they pass other sleds. Is it just me or dot eh guys riding teh REV seem to be the biggest dick heads on the trail. The last two times I road I almost got hit by REV riders.

Next year when a guy comes on my side of teh trail in a corner I'm going to turn around catch him at the next stop and tell him to slow the FC down.
