I was in the U.P. this week. I was riding pretty agressively and while taking a left corner while hitting some moguls the guages and lights shut
down, the engine backfired and quit. I was able to restart it and drove it back to the cabin without incident. I know I saw some pictures about
a wire rubbing through near the steering???? causing a short. It was like I hit the kill switch at half throttle.
Thanks in advance

Wire?
If it was the wire rubbing, you would have blown a fuse and it would not have restarted. If the engine overheats it will shutdown, like you described.

For the lights to go out and engine to stall and backfire it sounds like when others have posted a loss of battery voltage. Is it possible the battery positive grounded or the cable is loose?

Thanks for yur replies. I found the problem. I changed oil and filter yesterday. What a nice spot to get to the filter!! Oh well only so much room. I found that when I tok the battery out the conections were very loose (could actually wiggle the cable). I will give it a try and see what happens.
Thanks again

I sort of have the same problem. Speedo went out, changed the fuse and worked fine until I shut the sled off. Went to start sled again and fuse blew again. Will a loose battery connection cause the fuse to blow?? Or any other help would be at of help.

No. check your wire harness coming from the key switch for a chafed wire. Alot of us had this problem last year.

Wires are all good. I moved them a little. I wil try another fuse.
Any other suggestions what the problem could be ??

The chafed ignition wire can be easily overlooked. It took two of us about and hour of hunting to finally locate it. You can easily miss it. Only if you have actually removed the keyswitch and CLOSELY examined the wire will then be able to find it. Mine was just a wee nick in the jacket on the tan/yellow wire next to the sled-side connector to the ignition key switch.... barely noticeable.
From what I read....you're problem is VERBATIM in comparison to what happened to me too..... I would check AGAIN.
