I made a lot of changes to the sled and when I first bought it in the spring I was able to run it up to 92 mph (speedometer). The sled was completely stock. Now after many changes it will only run up to 80mph. The sled has Ulmer's primary weights, the reverse secondary from a '09 Vector with low miles, new drive sprockets, new drive shaft bearings, new Vector belt, low snow wheels all new idler wheel, fourth wheel kit and a 1.25 ripsaw track. The toe has been set at 7mm toed out and it has new Yamaha skis. The engagement speed is 4300 and the high end is 11,450. The clutch belt sits just below the secondary sheaths. I did remove the three small screws in the secondary and removed the washers but it didn't seem to change the height of the belt so I reinstalled the washers. Clutch alignment was set at 16.3mm.

So what direction should I take to try to recover my top end? :dunno:

Vector clutch, what angle is the helix? The phazer might not have the power if the angle is too far off from what we have. I think on the short tracks we are 39 degree stock or something. Personally wouldnt go much higher than low 40's for angle, unless running a dual angle you could get away with it.

edit - yeah, ours is a 39, MTX came with a 37 and only info I can see is up to 2008, showing the helix at a 43deg. Might be different on the 09, not sure. Maybe that combined with your taller lug track is just a bit too much? Try different settings on the secondary?

Oh and forgot to add, after upgrading my track my speedo actually seemed to read more accurately, maybe less track spin possibly? Mine read a bit lower after track upgrade for sure. But compared to gps it was more accurate.

You say at your 80mph you are still holding 11,450? thats damn near perfect rpm. I think our peak is 11,250 so youre pretty much spot on.

Cant think of anything else. Are you stock power-wise? Could just be stock hp is not quite enough for the new helix and track you have?

Thats all my ideas, time to have a drink and watch Bones for a couple hours... :drink:

I'm running a custom exhaust so maybe a few more ponies. I know that Yamahas is running a Vector clutch and I don't think he mentioned any speed issues.

How do you tell what Helix you have?

Helix has a set of numbers on it that correlates with angles, you can call dealer or try to find a chart. The TY main page has sled specs but only til 08.

No speed loss here. You mentioned vector belt. I wonder if it's longer if you are not able to shift all the way. What drive sprockets are you running?

I couldn't tell the difference between the Phazer and Vector belt by eye. I'm running the stock drives and gearing for the FX. I was thinking that it wasn't shifting all the way as well because it performs well and rpm's are spot on. Tomorrow I'll experiment by running the Phazer belt and see the results then run the stock secondary.

What helix and spring are you running on your Vector secondary and what hole are you running the spring in? I might copy whats on yours to give me a starting point.

I have never seen 90 mph stock or modified.

It was a stock Vector GT set to 3-3 all I did was put it on and it see almost exactly 11,400.

What's your top speed? Your rpms are almost exactly the same as mine. Specs say 43 helix and the pink spring for 08 but I'm assuming it will be the same for the 09 I'm running.

My 07 gt would hit low 90's all day but my 07 FX would always be in the mid 80's.both sleds nodded pretty well..if you want to go faster you have to do what is did..

So what is did??

I just want to get back what I had. I know the GT had different gearing but I remember reading something about a forum member changing to the GT gear and found no difference in the top end.

I went from the GT gear (20t) to the RTX gear (18t) with Ulmers clutch kit and the top end is virtually identical. I think the 20t is really a little tall for the stock motor.

You might want to check what helix and spring they used on the 1996 V-Max. I believe some members are using the clutch because you didn't have to machine the splines but the horse power of that motor should be comparable to the Phazers. It might give you a starting point.

The red gt would get me out the hole too, it was straight up faster..i did the gear change upto a gt gearing..it was awful..i ened up selling the gear to cannondale..that red gt was a runner..it was 10mph faster all the time...i actually thought about swapping the plastics..but she would have noticed the a-arms..and I wasn't going thru all that..

Got it but don't want to go to the Nyto just yet. Strange your GT was faster and the FX gear change didn't make a difference.
