ok so I have put on over 800 miles so far this season with no problems. went out yesterdayin perfect conditions and was fine for about 30 miles. Stopped for lunch, got back out on the trail and 5 minutes later my temp light came on. I stopped and let it cool off, I continued on and my heat light came right back on. Kept doing this for about 50 miles, and it got so hot it boiled most of the coolent out of the overflow. In a trail side emergency I dumped a bunch of vodka, 7-up and flavoured water in it. But here is the real mystery. I took my hood off and It would run completly perfect and not heat up at all, then as soon as I put the hood back on it would heat up in like 2 minutes. please help, what could the problem be.
thanks

Maybe was a little low on coolant before your last ride.
Flush out the system and fill it up try again.

nobody else was overheating but what I'm worried about is that last year i put a stud through the heat exhanger and accidentally drove it for like 10 miles not knowing and that would have been pretty hard on the water pump. So, i'm worried that the water pump maybe went in it. I have also read that the rad or thermastat could be plugged?

Because the relays have been so problematic on theses sleds I would replace the fan relay just to make sure it's not acting up. What did you do to fix the exchanger? You may want to recheck it for leaks. If a fuse blows there's normally an underlying problem that needs corrected.

x2 on the fan fuse. Had it happen to me with the same symptom. Fuse box right side 10amp. Box has a spare. Hard to tell when the fan is spinning but will certainly overheat without it....

I replaced it with a brand new heat exchanger from yamaha and when I started overheating that was the first thing I checked

Was this the first time out with the new exchanger? I still think air in the system. Drain the vodka out and put coolant in and run it for a minutes with the cap off. Did you do this the first time?

800 miles since the exchanger has been replaced....I doubt it's air in the system. The Nytro tends to burp the air out after a few heat cycles. Make sure you fill the coolant at the radiator then bring the reservoir to the correct level.

Because you can run it with the hood off without overheating I'd lean toward a radiator fan issue. Check fuse, replace the relay and check to make sure the fan blades spin freely. I had my Trail Tank slide forward and actual hit the fan blades.

Thanks, I will try that tonight
