building a turbo kit with no experience... I would not like to try this.
Dont be negative.. I did my whole rx1 motor swap and and turbo setup and had never done anything with a turbo besides see the one on my dads truck. Just take your time and read on here more then you want to, then start again, and reread, then go work and reread. takes a lot of time but is one of the most rewarding things ever.
as far as power, shimmed with cam timing done on pump fuel is FAST... it will be alright for a season or two.. then up goes the boost. its just to much fun.

apex blower 136 for asphalt racing
osp drag race sled (apex engine based)
Just being realistic, I broek so many engines... the learning curve has been pretty rough for me... just trying to warn a bit.
But now I have a blower and a turbo system both 75% made all by myself. (I dont weld... so ther eare parts I can't do obviously)

Thanks aja636 for the info. Tips like this are what I am looking for. I Have tried searching for past threads about making turbo kits but I cannot seam to find much that is very helpful. I can weld and I have friends that are welders and an uncle that has access to a cnc machine so the fabrication and plumbing is not what I am worried about. I need help on making it work right once it is build. Like wether I will be able to get a base program from a company to start my tuning off? And whether I will be ok with the pcIII? If I buy the lcd screen with the multifunction hub and all the sensors will it be able to display egt's, boost, air/fuel? How do I set the amount of boost the turbo makes? ( I know you adjust the wastegate but do I just finish it take it out and see what boost its making then adjust?) I see that in the mxc kit they have the factory blow off valve blocked off. Can I not use this blow off valve?
(I am using a mitsubishi 16t turbo, fuel pump, regulator, head shim, valve timing,pcIII w-lcd screen, and hopefully 8-10lbs of boost on pump fuel)

pc3 should be okay.
\What you would really need is something that can datalog...
neither rb3 nor pc3 seems to do this

Ulmers website says that the lcd screen with the pcIII can data log if you have a sd memory card.

If I should be using a different programmer what should it be? and how much?

For waste gate I would set the rod to have about 1/8" pre load, meaning you have to pull the waste gate rod about 1/8" to get it on the flapper post. That should put you in a safe boost area. Then you run in it and watch very carefully at the boost gauge. I would use a boost controller to make adjustments. Set the wastegate for you low boost and the boost controller will go anywhere up to double the wastegate setting.
For fuel controller, I got used to Rapid Bike 3 and went to Hurricane and got schooled on every thing RB3, while I was there dave built a map for my sled that was great. I have used an old Pure logic box, it worked but was glitchy and always acted up. They are the only ones I can speak for. But the Power commander 5 with auto tune looks like a nice set up, might want to look into that one! For base maps, that depends on what controller you use. This seems like you will have to build your own, which is very possible, just have to be patient and go at it slow and safe.
For a blow off valve, call Ted Jannetty up and have him send you one of his Vortecs. they dont make any big noise that some people want but they work the best. They have nothing to do with boost, they just keep the turbo from surging and help "blow off" boost when you are off throttle.
When you make the header, use 321 S/S or 304 at the least, 304 is fine for the exhaust after turbo. Once all fabbed up, take header, turbo exhaust housing and exhaust and send to Swain tech and get it all coated. Will help big time with heat and longevity.
If you can figure a way to support the weight of the turbo, do it!! look up Impluse Turbo and see what he does.
Hope this all helps, Keep looking around this section, you will find tons of info, just weed out some of the stupid stuff and you will start to find out who is saying what you need and then search their name and topics.
Good luck.

I dont know if you know about it, but I would go on snowest and check with the user NM.. he is working on a VERY simple fueling system for apex's and nytro's.. IMO its the way to go, 2 knobs.. thats it, about as easy as she gets. no mapping, just 2 dials and you can adjust for weather, elevation, blah blah blah, great for those who dont want to spend time building maps. again, just something to check out.
as far as a header. SUPPORT THE TURBO!!! when I built mine I was told what I was using would only last a little or very short time, I have 1000 miles on it and only issue I had was I blew out the flex joint at about 600, so I deleted it and now its solid motor to turbo and still have no issues. im only using 16 gauge 304 stainless, but I have 2 brackets that hold the turbo up and to the motor. it works awsome. also, either wrap the header or get a really good coating, this helps the temp swings in the material, and the slower they are, the longer they will hold up.

321 Stainless
I have some 321 stainless. Two Straight sections and a 180 bend. It is from burns stainless. It is 16ga. Will work great for building a header. Should be enough for a 3 cylinder header. You can order more from burns as well. Let me know if your interested. I would sell it at a reduced rate from burns website price. I have a intercooler as well if your interested. It is setup for the 3 cylinder right now but you can make a new end tank for it easily enough for the 4 cylinder. Can give you a great price on that too.
If you haven't seen my build on in the sled garage forum check it out. I have not followed this entire post but I feel like you can get a great idea of what to do from my thread over there.

I checked out NM's Fuel system on snowestonline.com and sent him a pm asking about it. I am very interested in his standalone system and am wondering if anyone has any experience with them? As for the stainless dirk_03 I should be able to find some locally but thank you. I'm liking all the info and will be staring a thread in the sled garage forum once I get started on the fabrication of this kit.

I dont have any experience with it, but from what I have seen and read ( i spend way to much time on snowest) he doesnt seem at all interested in sleds that dont run spot on.

What size pipe should I use to make my header? What size should the three pipes exiting the head be? And what size pipe should they collect into going to the turbo? Also is there a certain size I should be using for my cold side plumbing? Can It be to big or small?
