I was out yesterday on hard packed trails with good lub and the best I could get was 171km. I run a 2010 ltx 136" and my buddy has a 2011 with a 144" and was getting 184km . all I changed on mine was a hawk cluch kit the rest is stock . where is my top end gone?

What was the top end before the clutch kit??
Can't compre the two sleds and say your are missing top end.
Go for a run and then switch out the clutch back to stock and then do the same run. Then compare your results.

Clutch kits can have a huge effect on the characteristics of a sled.
The best drag race setup may be good for 660" to 1/4 mile but may not be as fast on top end for radar runs as a stock setup was and vice versa.
Most times you have to "rob Peter to pay Paul"
You have to decide what you are really looking for and get the best compromise.
I personally am not crazy about generic clutch kits and do all my own clutching with adjustable weights and a variety of springs and helixs to match my specific application.

Ya I ran into this a bit with my 06 136" GT. I lowered the clutching close to 2-1, and added a clutch setup for corner to corner to beat up on those light ski doo's, but my top end suffered. I ended up having ulmer machine my sheeve for more top nod, and added the yamacharger which really is only good at top end. If memory serves me right the dream ometer said 112mph, and I still had the awesome back shift and off the line. Which is needed here, cause 90% of our Midwest riding is in and out of turns. The other 10% is lakes! and rail beds. So I opted for quicker then faster. Gained some of my faster back adding the shelve, and charger, but never wanted to give up my quickness up to 80 mph

A call to Allan at Ulmer racing wouldn't hurt as he really knows these sleds and could probably put something together that would suit your needs and budget.

Marc, I also run a 2010 apex LTX, I did a ot of research and the best clutch set up for me turned out to be a spring switch to GR-GR-GR in primary. everything else is still stock. This setup was recommended on here by most guys??? This set up works great for me on trails in maine with slight gain on top. Hope this helps.
