A question for Mr. Sled:
I just ordered the stiffer spring (pricey - $200). It should be in a couple of days.
With gear I'm about 250 and with loaded saddlebags and trunk bag I'm sure it will be more like 290 - with the luggage weight at the very back of the sled.
I'm thinking of installing the heavy spring with the clip in the 2nd position - using the lower settings (like 1) for cruising around locally and cranking it up a little for the Northern trip in a few weeks.
We still like to ride fairly hard, even with the luggage on. With the stock spring on the 2nd clip position and setting #5 I was bottoming alot on the TY ride last weekend in Quebec with the RA set to firmest (light luggage too - only 3 days).
Also, I'd like the ability to crank up the suspension to handle more air time when I go out riding with a few of my more aggressive riding buddies (typically lots of air).
What would you recommend for the clip position? What do you have yours set on?

I am at 1st postion and after the spring broke in I had to crank the adjuster up to about number 5 now....at 1st I dont think it will be a problem ...I would put it in at #1 clip and number 4 on the adjuster and see how it feels ...

If you think the spring is pricey, the shock is $616 USD retail

This is a great thread and for those of you (ME :? ) who are on a Monoshock for the first season, I think it's well worth the read. So I figured I would bring it back TTT. Thanks guys for sharing this information from last season.
Here's a better shot of the C-Clip that everyone was talking about....
Here is the link to the Maximum Sled article.

05RX1LE, Thanks for attaching the Max article. It really cleared up my questions on the Mono suspension adjustments. WOW! What a great site! Thanks again everyone. Studdog.

05RX1LE, is that the shock off your 05 RX-1 ? What spring do you have on it, it looks like a multi-rate spring. On my 05 RX-1 the spring is a straight rate spring.

Question: Maximum Sled article Shock Picture
I do have a question about that picture of the shock.
Based on the 2 grooves that can be seen, Is the C-Clip in the "FIRMEST" position (position #3) in this picture?

Position #2 (middle)
That bottom "groove" is actually a step in the shock diameter not a groove.

So "stock" clip position is the groove that the arrow is pointing at.
I have to admit....you have been a great resource to me for this suspension. Thanks ReX.

BTW, when I installed the spring last february I decided to install the c-clip in the 2nd position.
With just me on the sled I had the cam adjuster in the #1 position and it was a hair too high - but only for the first 100 miles or so. Once the spring settled a little it was perfect.
On the long trip with saddle bags and the trunk bag I was able to crank the spring up to position #3 or #4 which handled the rough trails perfectly (no bottoming).
For me the c-clip in the 2nd position is the best compromise (but if you're less than 220-250 I would recomend the stock, lowest preload position).
