2014 Viper xtx, Thunder products clutch kit
I've ordered the 4th wheel kit to replace the trihub but I've read how a lot of people recommend adding extra wheels. I've read thru the stickies but I'm still a bit confused. Can anyone recommend where to add additional wheels to decrease rolling resistance? Here is my skid. If you have a suggestion for wheel placement could u also suggest a vendor? Thanks!!

Doesn't look like you could on that's skid. Anti stab wheels could be added though. They are on Mtx stock now.

Just go with Dupont slides they really reduce the friction. I put them on my 14 when it had 3000 miles on it and the stock ones were still good but even on the stand I could tell a huge difference just rotating the track by hand. I also felt smoother when coasting even though the back shift of the clutches slows you doen it felt smoother.

I would try it stock, my personal sled is a 14 XTX and have just over 1000 miles with no visible wear. Trail conditions less than ideal... If not throw some Duponts on.

the 2015 XTX came with anti-stab wheels. Just space the wheels out so you even out the area between wheels... if that makes sense. Its not a science. just check for clearance and go for it.

I don't think the xtx really needed the extra wheels from what I can tell, the biggest reason I did them on my Ltx is because the super stiff stock suspension caused a lot of drag and my original slides were actually shot after 500 miles. Mine started out as a 100 mph sled and slowly went to a 85 mph sled from the slides wearing so bad. Put an extra set of wheels on mine and it changed instantly back to a fast sled without doing anything else. Since then I put DuPont slides on and haven't had any issues with rolling resistance. But gotta remember the xtx skid is totally different from the Ltx and rtx so they've gotta be setup differently too and there's plenty of guys that can help in that area.

I wouldn't tell some not to install extra wheels if they wanted.. It really doesn't hurt. However I just installed scratchers on my XTX. And on my MTX I installed extra wheels. The previous owner of my MTX ruined a set of rails in about 600km because he didn't use the scratchers.

By the looks of that xtx skid I don't see where you can put extra wheels without drilling your own holes, I'm sure that's not an issue for some folks but gotta make sure the wheels clear all the suspension parts when suspension is fully collapsed.

Just place the wheel, unbolt your rear shock and check for clearance. Someone has to drill the holes, no different if I do it, or some guy in Minnesota. Actually I have Ice Age rails, so.. Some guy in Montana for me. haha.

Don't get me wrong, more wheels help there's no doubt. But from my experience and from what my customers have told me, I haven't seen much for slide wear on these short track (141 and less) Vipers compared to other Yamaha sleds.

So are scratchers pretty important for the xtx? Thanks for the input everyone. I'm installing the new 4th wheel kit this week.

I think they are a waste of time on this skid. I ran some pretty bad conditions over the past 2 yrs and only replaced the hyfax at 3000 miles cause I was putting in 4th wheel kit and had the track loose ad got a good deal on the dupont's.

I thought for sure we needed more wheels when we got these vipers but after a season my opinion changed.

We have about 1200 miles on our original XTX slids and virtually no wear yet, I have strachers but rarely use them. Our old phazers with extra wheels installed needed a set of slides religiously every year.

It seems to me with this chassis in all models only time slide wear happens is if riding mud for many miles and then scratchers would do nothing but dig a nice little furrow for planting seeds! Seriously we have a radiator with a big fan. Most of the Cats other than 7000 dont. That is why those guys do need scratchers. Wish you all could hear all the overheating calls my dealership gets from the cat owners everytime the trails set up or freeze solid. Feel sorry for them. They have to find every patch of snow possible.
